He was such a great poet IN HIGH SCHOOL that he inspired me to write poetry ABOUT HIM (which of course didn't measure up to his). He set some sort of standard for me, about being creative and discerning, that I never ever ever ever forgot. He played blues records for me, at his house, and got me started playing harmonica, an escape into music that I feel saved my life several times. The last time I saw him, in Wellesley, in 1981, I felt I hadn't lived up to his expectations. He was dealing rare books or something at the time, and I was working at the Wellesley Townsman, doing graphic design. I talked to him about relationships. We corresponded after that, but I wish I'd seen him once again.
