DANIEL MULLEN Obituary

MULLEN, Daniel J. Age 86, passed away peacefully on 11 May, 2021, with his wife Janet at his side. Dan grew up in Milton, MA and graduated from Milton High and Stonehill College. After serving five years in the US Navy, he joined the US Naval Reserve, attaining the rank of Lt. Commander. He attended Suffolk Law School at night, while working as a salesman for Union Carbide, and received his Juris Doctor. After clerking for US District Court Judge Frank Murray, Dan worked in the law offices of Francis X. Bellotti before moving to the law department at Union Carbide in Manhattan. After his return to the Boston area, he joined the Flatley Company as real estate counsel. From the Flatley Company he moved to the Prudential Insurance Co., where he was the Northeast Regional Counsel. While working at Prudential, he also served as the US Magistrate for the Cape Cod National Seashore. He later joined the real estate practice of the law firm of Goodwin, Procter & Hoar. After "retiring," Dan immersed himself in growing cranberries, attending co-operative meetings and taking courses to further his cranberry knowledge while enjoying the friendships of other growers and Ocean Spray workers along the way.

Dan is survived by his wife Janet, his daughter Julie Mullen and her husband John Sullivan, his sons Daniel and his wife Sally, and Peter and his wife Yoshiko, and his grandchildren: Heather Cole Mullen and husband George Do, Adam Cole-Mullen and wife Mito Makino, Molly, Beckett, Isaac, James, Ethan, and Joshua Mullen.

Dan had a lifelong interest in politics and was a strong supporter of local government. He represented West Barnstable as a Barnstable town meeting member for many years and was instrumental in the purchase of Sandy Neck Beach by the Town of Barnstable. He was active in the West Barnstable Fire Department as moderator and a member of the Prudential Committee and supported countless Village events.

A lover of animals, Dan always had a dog and a horse and myriad other animals which he affectionately cared for. Never one to slack off, Dan was fond of growing a large garden and was quick to offer the fruits of his labor to friends and neighbors. He was an avid reader, seeking throughout his long life to increase his knowledge, and especially enjoyed sitting by the fire with a dog at his feet reading a thick history book. Invariably helpful and generous, his cheerful attitude attracted people to him and allowed the formation of many friendships across the economic and political spectrum.

As Dan would say with a smile on his face, he "Had a good run of it."

Dan was a classmate at law school who was usually way ahead of the pack
when it came to plowing through evening school, working and being a parent.A sharp mind and a sharper wit,he was the best of companions.
May he Rest In Peace.
