DANIEL SHEEHY Obituary

SHEEHY, Daniel P. 86, of Cohasset, died peacefully on Thursday, February 9th. Beloved husband of Elizabeth "Betty" Sheehy, loving father of Daniel Sheehy, Jr., Timothy Sheehy and Elisabeth Allen, devoted grandfather of Cameron and Graham Allen and Megan Sheehy. His brother John and many nieces and nephews also survive him. Dan was predeceased by his parents, Alfred and Mildred, and his brothers Alfred and David. Among those saddened by his death are his dear friends, and the many young mariners he assisted in choosing Mass Maritime Academy in preparation for going to sea.

Dan was a native of Weymouth who grew to love sailing during summers at Bass River on Cape Cod. He graduated from Mass Maritime Academy in 1952, and sailed the world on freighters and tankers. Dan and Betty married in 1955, and lived in Japan during his service as a Naval Intelligence Officer. Upon returning to the States, they built a home and raised their family in Cohasset. Dan started a successful youth basketball program in town and was instrumental in the initial launch and growth of the Cohasset Sailing Club, where he actively raced with the family crew. His passion for the ocean led him to sail, race, and teach. Family sailing vacations were based on his love for the Cape and the Caribbean.

A serial entrepreneur, Dan started several companies with successful runs, including groundbreaking work in the Third Party Administration business models. He served as President of the Mass Marketing Insurance Institute of America, holding a board seat after his term.

Golf was a retirement passion. Dan held positions as Starter and Ranger at South Shore Country Club. He was an avid reader and a wonderful cook. He loved life, and had a gift for always seeing the best in people. His devotion to Betty and his family were extraordinary.

A memorial service will be held at Glastonbury Abbey, 16 Hull Street, Hingham, MA on Saturday, February 18th at 9:30 am, followed by a brief reception at the Glastonbury Conference Center. In lieu of flowers, donations in his memory may be made to Glastonbury Abbey.
