DANIEL SULLIVAN Obituary

SULLIVAN, Daniel J. Jr. On November 27, 2024, Daniel J. Sullivan, Jr., a long-time resident of Newton, MA, passed away peacefully at his retirement community, North Hill. He was 91. Dan was born in Boston on November 7, 1933, to Daniel J. Sullivan, Sr. and Alice (Strong) Sullivan. He was the eldest of four boys and his parents moved to Auburndale, where he spent his childhood. After his mother died at an early age, Dan was primarily responsible for the care of his brothers, Eugene Sullivan and Arthur Sullivan, who both predeceased him. He is survived by his youngest brother, Dr. Robert Sullivan (Dr. Julie Sullivan), a resident of La Jolla, CA. After attending all public schools in Newton, where he excelled in math and music, Dan put himself through Boston University, graduating in 1955 with a degree in accounting, Summa Cum Laude. He then joined the Air Force and was stationed in Missouri and Greenland and while on leave, reconnected with a childhood love interest, Anne Marchand. Anne and Dan had met while both working at Norumbega Park and then, after a brief courtship, had their wedding reception there in April of 1958. As newlyweds, while Dan was still in the Air Force, they moved to Holyoke, where in 1959, they had their first child, Teresa. After an honorable discharge from the Air Force, Dan was selected to work in the Raytheon Management program. In 1968, Dan left Raytheon and joined Dennison Manufacturing Company, based in Framingham. Other than a brief stint as the President of National Blank Book, a subsidiary of Dennison, Dan spent his entire career with the Dennison holding company, rising through the ranks to become the Chief Financial Officer. His final responsibility was to oversee the merger of Dennison with the Avery International Corporation. He retired early at the age of 58. Dan is survived by his three children, Teresa Scafati (Rob), Alice Fitzgerald (Kevin) and Daniel Sullivan, III (Sarah); his four grandchildren, Garrett Fitzgerald (Jacquie), Connor Fitzgerald (Sierra), Caitlin Sullivan and Danny Sullivan; and two great-grandchildren, Lucas Fitzgerald and Colin Fitzgerald. Dan was a devoted family man and volunteer. He took loving care of his wife, Anne, for the last five years of her life. They were married for 63 years when she predeceased him in 2019. Dan was a master gardener, an accomplished piano player and singer. After retirement, he became an active volunteer with SHINE and the Massachusetts Horticultural Society. Throughout his entire lifetime, Dan was a proponent of education and hard work. With that, he took great pride in the accomplishments of his children and his grandchildren, whom he dearly loved. In his last years, he enjoyed the time he spent with Linda Kenerson, whom he met when he moved to North Hill. Special thanks to the Jackie Donovan Agency and the special "guards" who kept Dan safe during his last few weeks, Hospice of the Good Shepherd, which provided support and comfort to Dan and his family and Dr. Chryssanthi (Dr. Chrissy) Kournioti of Mass General Brigham. A Celebration of Dan's Life will be held at a later date. In lieu of flowers or other remembrances, please consider a contribution in Dan's memory to Hospice of the Good Shepherd, Newton branch, gscommunitycare.org Arr. by Magni FH, NEWTON.
