DAVID CARLSON Obituary

CARLSON, David L. Age 85, of Bethel, ME, formerly of Allston, MA, passed away peacefully on Saturday, August 17, 2024, at Coos County Nursing Home in Berlin, NH, surrounded by his loving family. He was preceded in death by his beloved wife, Joan E. (Sylvester) Carlson, with whom he spent 55 years of marriage. Raised in Allston, he was the son of the late Anton and Margaret (Grealish) Carlson. David graduated from Boston Latin School and subsequently from Northeastern University with a degree in Electrical Engineering. He had a long career as an engineer, including time working at Ikor, where he met his wife, Joan, followed by positions at Honeywell and Optra Inc. While at Honeywell, David worked on multiple projects for NASA's Jet Propulsion Laboratory, building the star tracker guidance systems for the Viking missions to Mars and the Voyager space probes. David enjoyed travel, golf, classical music and playing bridge. He was also a longtime Red Sox fan, a passion he and Joan shared. In 2018, David and Joan undertook the adventure of a lifetime when they moved to Bethel, ME and built a new home to be close to their three young grandsons. David often remarked on how much joy their time in Bethel brought them. David is survived by two daughters, Suzanne E. Carlson of Maplewood, NJ and Elaine M. Chappell of Shelburne, NH; Elaine's husband, Jason; and their three sons, Charles, David and Noah of Shelburne, NH; his brother, Rev. Msgr. George F. Carlson of Hull, MA; and many loving nieces and nephews. In addition to his wife and parents, David was preceded in death by his sister, Elizabeth A. (Carlson) Danner and her late husband, William both of Allston, MA; and his brother, John W. Carlson and John's late wife, Carol both of Bedford, MA. Visiting Hours will be held at the Conway, Cahill-Brodeur Funeral Home, 82 Lynn St., PEABODY, on Saturday, August 24, 2024, from 9:15 AM to 10:15 AM, followed by a Funeral Mass, at St. Richard Parish, in Danvers, at 11 AM. Family and friends are kindly invited to attend. Interment will be in St. Mary Cemetery in Salem, MA. Saddened to hear that David passed on. He was a friend and mentor to many of us Allstonites. David was a wealth of knowledge which he shared profusely. RIP our friend.

I was saddened to hear of Dave. Dave was an Allston legend, everyone knew and liked Dave. He was my first and best financial advisor. God bless you, Dave.

To the Carlson Family,
Though gone from Allston for over
50 years I remember David was
the first to have the quintessential
1964 maroon red mustang-a ragtop
of course . Also remember he was
a top notch 10 pin bowler. Hardly
surprised he had such a distinguished career as an E.E. May
the loving memory of David sustain
his family and friends at this time.
Sincerely,
Bob Mee

To the Carlson Family, I offer my sincere condolences. David was one of the smartest guys around, and he would tell us younger guys, to read, and read and read. He had a large paper route and would fill his station wagon with newspapers. We would help out and at the end of the day, Dave would buy a case of foreign beer for our labor. Of course we were still in high school. David joined an Allston reunion at a Western Avenue establishment, and he stole the show. Everyone was so pleased to see him. A wonder person, and my God Bless him.

Sorry to learn of the loss of Dave. I have many fond memories of him in Allston and on the Cape. May he rest in peace.

David:
Was a mentor to many a young fellow coming up in our Allston neighborhood, smart as a whip, a hard worker and an excellent driving instructor.
