DAVID DOUGHTY Obituary

DOUGHTY, David G., Jr. Active & Honored Bowdoin College Alumnus David G. Doughty, Jr. of Lanesville (formerly Boxford, Danvers and Fort Collins, CO); loving husband of the late Catherine (Tierney) Doughty, passed away following a long battle with cancer on December 13, 2017 at the Kaplan Family Hospice House in Danvers. He was 71. Born in Boxford, he was the oldest son of the late David and Priscilla (Talbot) Doughty. He was educated at Masconomet High School where he was captain of his school's football team, lettered in basketball, baseball, and was president of his class ('64). He also graduated second in his class and was a national merit scholar. He furthered his education at Bowdoin College, Brunswick, ME, where he continued to be an active alumnus until his death. David served his country as a commissioned officer in the US Navy (LTJG) before joining Western Electric in 1970. He went on to work for several pioneering computer firms, including Apollo, Data General, Masscomp and Concurrent Computer before joining Hewlett Packard as purchasing manager in 1989. In 1997, he relocated to Fort Collins, Colorado to head HP's purchasing division there. Although based in Colorado and traveling the world on business for HP, David always maintained a second home in (and close ties to) his beloved Lane's Cove in Gloucester where his extended family has spent summers for generations. Upon retiring from HP, David pursued his twin passions of travel and photography. Among his proudest achievements were the creation of two online blogs, LongStranger1968Blog.com and Classof68VietnamWarEraStories. Both blogs were designed to reconnect Bowdoin alumni and featured contributions from over 100 classmates and friends. The blogs recounted everything from college life memories to very personal Vietnam War experiences and served as a forum for Bowdoin grads to share their later life tragedies and triumphs. David was recognized by Bowdoin College and honored for his many outstanding contributions to the school and his classmates at his 45th class reunion. Both blogs will continue to be available online as a resource to his fellow alums and as a lasting memorial to David. David is survived by his brother, Kenneth Doughty of Lanesville; his sister, Jane Doughty Merrill and her husband Wayne Merrill of Boxford; his son, Matthew Doughty and wife Michelle of Acton; his daughter, Megan Doughty and partner Adam Medlyn of Townsend; granddaughters, Cady, Cirie and Aeris; nephew, David Merrill and niece, AJ Whelan, plus many cousins, great nieces, great nephews and an abundance of lifelong friends too numerous to count. ARRANGEMENTS: His Memorial service will be held in the First Church Congregational Boxford, 4 Georgetown Rd, Boxford, on Saturday, February 3rd at 1 P.M. In lieu of flowers, expressions of sympathy may be made in David's name to Bowdoin College Alumni Fund (Class of 1968), 4100 College Station, Brunswick, ME 04011. Assisting the family with the arrangements is the Peterson-O'Donnell Funeral Home, 167 Maple St., (Rte. 62), DANVERS. www.odonnellfuneralservice.com
