David Gray Garland

80, Boat Builder& , Aviator of Pine Island, FL. died Tuesday, March 9, 2004. He was the husband of Faith M. Garland, to whom he was married for 44 years. He was the former husband of the late Sonia C. Fogt. Mr. Garland was born in Boston, MA. He was educated at Shady Hill School in Cambridge, MA, Deerfield Academy in Deerfield, MA and Harvard College in Cambridge, MA where he studied horticulture and biology. Raised on Cape Cod, MA. he spent his early summers in New Mexico, Wyoming and California riding horses and traveling with his step-father, Wesley Dennis, the illustrator of Misty of Chincoteague among other children's books. A Naval Aviator in the South Pacific during WWII, he flew an F-4U Corsair from the aircraft carrier Lexington and in the late 1950s, he founded Garland Products, building wooden boats and designing innovative marine products. His avocations included power boating and sailing, woodworking, model making, flying his J3 Cub seaplane and aerial photography. He also enjoyed gardening, fishing, architectural and landscape design, traveling the Caribbean with his family and driving his vintage 1951 Willys Jeep. He raised his nine children in Buzzards Bay, MA and later retired to Pine Island, Florida. In addition to his wife, he is survived by his five sons and four daughters: Philip Garland of Barrington, RI; Thomas A. Garland of West Falmouth, MA; James T. Garland or Santa Barbara, CA; Robert B. Garland of East Falmouth, MA; Patricia R. Garland of Brookline, MA; Peter B. Garland of Falmouth, MA; Elizabeth D. Garland of West Falmouth, MA; Carolyn M. Garland of Los Angeles, CA; and Amy T. Garland of Buzzards Bay, MA. Mr. Garland is also survived by 15 grandchildren. A private Graveside Service followed by a reception celebrating his life was held in his memory.
