DAVID HARTWELL Obituary

HARTWELL, David G. Of Westport NY, passed away on January 20, 2016 at the age of 74. David is survived by his wife, Kathryn Cramer, his four children Alison, Geoffrey, Peter, and Elizabeth, his sisters Rebecca Chin and Janice Hartwell, and his first wife Patricia Wolcott Hartwell. David Hartwell was an award-winning editor of fantasy and science fiction novels and one of most influential science fiction editors of his generation. David earned a B.A. from Williams College, a Master's Degree from Colgate, Doctorate from Columbia University. He was an editor in the mold of Maxwell Perkins and Clifton Fadiman, engaged not just with book acquisition bit also with crafting the best books possible. David had been an editor with Tor Books since the early 1980's and also published dozens of highly regarded anthologies, many edited with his wife Kathryn Cramer. He cared about science fiction reviewing and criticism and so published the New York Review of Science Fiction out of his home. David was known for wearing colorful neckties and for leading groups of science fiction fans in the singing of "Teen Angel" at 3:00 AM at Science Fiction conventions. At the time of his death he was still at the height of his powers as an editor and had expected to continue working with science fiction for at least another decade. Dearly loved by his family and friends, David will be greatly missed. Visiting hours will be held on Wednesday, January 27, 2016 from 4:00 to 7:00 p.m. at the MacDonald Funeral Home, 1755 Ocean Street (Rte 139) MARSHFIELD. So sorry to have just learned of David's passing. He was a fine gentleman who will be greatly missed. Best to his family.

My wife Susan and I send our condolences to Dave's wife and children on the passing their husband and father. I was a classmate and Zeta Psi fraternity brother of Dave's at Williams and have very fond memories of him as an ever-friendly and fun-loving guy. He was the same person at our reunions, and I will truly miss seeing him in the future. Life is precious and unpredictable. Dave had hoped to live into his nineties as his parents had, and as he said, "it seems a reasonable expectation."It didn't work out that way; and I think we all know we must learn learn to live each day to the fullest even as we rightfully plan for the future.

I saw and would say Hi to David Hartwell at least once a year for more years than I can recall. He was a Master Craftsman and acknowledged as such during his life time. He and Kathryn were a lovely couple. I will miss seeing his smile and hearing his hello - also seeing his coat of many colors flash through the book dealer's room.

Back in the 70's David allowed my husband, our friend Tom and myself to use their apartment for an interview with Harry Harrison since he was staying at a nearby men's club and I could not be allowed in. He not only helped with the interview, he also invited us to spend the night instead of driving straight home to RI so late at night. What a kind and generous man! He will certainly be missed by his family, friends and fans. Count me among the later. May he rest in peace.

I remember David bringing his kids to various convention and spending time both minding them and minding others. He was always a gracious friend. He is already greatly missed.

David Hartwell was always been a supportive presence in the SF&F field. He was one of the very first people I was introduced to. Over the years and through my graduate education, I looked to him for remediation in my reading--every year I would pick up a dozen tattered paperbacks by authors who helped build the field. Then at some point I started arguing with him. He knew more but I had my own opinion. He'd mentor anyone who'd listen.

I will always remember David for his wisdom and advice as a Member of the Executive Board of the International Association for the Fantastic in the Arts, for his sense of humor (sartorial and otherwise), and especially for his friendship.
