DAVID MASLEN Obituary

Maslen, David
Of Newburyport, age 65, died on July 6, 2013. His life fulfilled the prophecy in his 1966 Sharon High School yearbook quotation - "whose inborn worth his acts commend, to human race a friend." Mr. Maslen was blessed with 41 years of love and marriage to Patricia Ann Ryan, whom he met at a Holy Cross mixer. He frequently recounted how he looked across the dance floor, saw her and knew he wanted to be with her. He celebrated in her accomplishments as a mother and distinguished 5th grade teacher. Together they traveled the world. Mr. Maslen reveled in the endeavors and accomplishments of his daughters, Pamela Ryan Maslen, a Returned Peace Corps Volunteer, feminist, fellow world traveler, mother and Registered Nurse, and Julia Maslen White, fellow Holy Cross graduate, psychology counseling professional, marathoner and his ski buddy. He equally derived pleasure from his son-in-law Jonathan Nellis' career with the State Department as a foreign service officer. Cory White, his other son-in-law, delighted him with his career as a user experience design manager, an area Mr. Maslen, as an avid user of technology thought he understood. Mr. Maslen was the enthusiastic grandfather to Fiona Ryan Nellis, Alanna Maslen Nellis, and Sean Kelly Nellis, his beloved grandchildren. He also dearly loved his sister, Anne Elizabeth Burkholder, of Westport Point, MA., and his brother John Ramsay Maslen of Portland, OR. He was eagerly awaiting the arrival of his fourth grandchild, who will be his daughter Julia's first born. In his professional life, Mr. Maslen, a lawyer, retired from Aon, the global insurance and consulting firm as an Executive Vice President in its consulting operations (now known as Aon Hewitt). He was known for his ability to deliver results, his strong focus on his employees' development, his passionate commitment to making work meaningful and fun for those he worked with and the high integrity he exercised in business. He frequently said that he had the best job in the world. But once he retired, he learned that he was born for retirement. Previously he had worked for the U.S. Department of Labor and New England Mutual Life Insurance Company. He had also been an adjunct professor at Lesley University Graduate School of Management. He had served as a trustee and executive committee member of the Employee Benefits Research Institute and as an officer and trustee of the New England Employee Benefits Association. A graduate of Holy Cross, New England Law and Boston University School of Law, Mr. Maslen was an enthusiastic life long learner. Mr. Maslen, whose father died while he was in high school, worked his way through Holy Cross, working full time as a teamster his senior year to pay his tuition. He is a veteran of the U.S. Navy and proudly served as a corpsman from 1969 to 1971 during the Vietnam War. Mr. Maslen was an accomplished athlete who excelled at, golf, skiing, biking, and tennis. He loved hiking in the great outdoors of Tucson, Arizona, where he and his wife spent many winters. He achieved the life long goal of completing two marathons. Mr. Maslen was an active member of the retired men's weekday group at Ould Newbury Golf Club, and of St. Paul's Episcopal Church in Newburyport, MA. Mr. Maslen lived his personal philosophy that to live well, you must be grateful in the highs and graceful in the lows. He was an inspiration to his family and friends, a man who lived with dignity and courage. A perfect gentleman to all. Calling hours will be held on Friday, July 12, 2013 from 4:00 PM to 8:00 PM at Twomey-LeBlanc and Conte Funeral Home, 193 High Street, NEWBURYPORT, MA. A Memorial Service celebrating David's life will be held on Saturday, July 13th at 11:00 AM at St. Paul's Episcopal Church, 166 High Street, Newburyport, MA. Dave took his work seriously, but himself not at all, and was an incredibly humane presence at RTS and infinitely patient with a young, recycled Academic new to the business world (me). His reputation throughout the firm was pure gold, and his just-in-time influence on the challenging office dynamics in NBPT was inspired. He even supplied our southern toddler Robert with his first, and best-ever, baby sitters, his two wonderful daughters. We were the "other" David and Patricia in the RTS family, and send loving thoughts to Pat and the girls with fond memories of times together as couples and families many years ago.

David Maslen was a loving family man and accomplished professional. This was obvious in how special and revered he was to his nieces in their young-adult years. It was equally obvious how special they and their families were to him.
I had no idea until reading his obituary how incredibly accomplished he was. It took a smart, personable, diligent man to accomplish so much while such life-balance. David did this in spite of cards being stacked against him at a young age.
I pray God blesses his soul while comforting his family with the lessons and memories David provided until they are reunited. May his family also find comfort knowing he is reunited with so many loved-ones, including his loving brother-in-law.

The day David hired me to work at RTS/Aon was a high point in my professional life. He was the most inspiring manager I've ever worked for. He held the bar high for us all, and his brilliance, humor, and humanity made us want to jump way over it. He created a team with his unique leadership skills that was more than a sum of its parts. He leaves a great legacy. Blessings to his family.

My sympathy to David's family.

I knew David from his time on the Benefits Council Board, where I got to appreciate not only his contributions to our work but also his dry wit and sense of humor.

Rest in peace.

What a tremendous loss to our world. David was an inspiring leader and admired colleague at Aon, and I am thankful for the opportunity I had to work with and learn from him. He was a wonderful person. My deepest sympathies go out to David's family.

I will second what Cristina Guerra said. I especially recall David being kind and understanding to me during moment of self-doubt I had, many years after having last seen him, even thought it had been so long since we had spoken. I pray, God rest his soul and enjoy his fellowship now so close. Gospel of John, Chapter 14.

Words fail to fully communicate what a wonderful human being and leader David was. He truly cared about the people who worked in his group and I am honored that I had the opportunity to learn from David during my Aon/RTS/Marketing Department years.

I extend my deepest and most sincere sympathies to the entire Maslen family.

My heartfelt condolences go out to Dave's family. I worked with Dave for 10 years at ACG, back when we were called "RTS." He always spoke so lovingly and proudly of his wife and daughters -- every milestone and accomplishment, he shared joyfully. I am shocked and saddened at his passing, and you are all in my thoughts and prayers.

Please accept my deepest condolences . I had the privilege, as did many others, of working with Dave at Aon Consulting. As I read through the obituary, all I could think of was how spot on it was. Dave was the ultimate professional in every way. But even more so was he was a magnificent person who touched anyone who had the luck of meeting Dave along the path of life. I always cherished the times I had with Dave at our occasional meetings and numerous phone calls asking for his always perfect advice. I count myself as a very lucky man to have had David Maslen in my life in any capacity. May God bless your family and heaven just received a special addition .
