Over the past few years, had tried to find Dr. Smith, never knowing until now - 12 years later - he had passed away. I had met him when was an MBA student at BC. In order to pay for tuition, had made up a job and offered to do the job in exchange for tuition. BC agreed. I was an English teacher going to business school - never having any under grad courses in business. It was overwhelming to say the least. Dr. Smith helped me reconfigure my schedule so I could keep my job and attend classes. He showed me how to take an incomplete vs a withdrawal. He was willing to bet on my work ethic, quality of effort and to do a complete job. He showed me how to back track and audit an Algebra course to remember how to do numbers. He supported my sense of humanity by helping me set up a foodbank for others. When I graduated, I gave Dr. Smith a check for 500.00 for this bank as my new employer had a matching donation project and asked if he would just give the money to whoever he wanted for food while they attended BC. He graciously accepted this role and am sure he helped put food on the table for numerous people. His kindnesses to me through the 2 years of my schooling was a gift I hoped to have passed on. He often said I could call him John, but I respected him so much, could never move beyond calling him, Dr. Smith. I hope he hears these words and know that his faith in me, help and understanding were and are as valuable as my BC MBA. Respectfully submitted, Rachel Selikof, MBA+45
