I met Deni and Joan on a windjammer cruise in Maine in 1974. We had many laughs on that trip and in subsequent years. Deni was a very funny person. He and Joan were quite the twosome. May happy memories of Deni bring warmth to the hearts and smiles to the faces of all who loved him. Gail Deegan

We were sorry to hear the sad news about your tremendous loss. Denie was a very special person. He was always engaging and so likable with a humorous & great personality. He was respected by all that were involved with him & knew him. He was very courageous in dealing with his illness for a long duration. Denie will be missed by his family, friends and the many lives he touched.

My condolences to the Byrne family on the loss of Dr. Byrne. Although not a close friend I had the occasion to meet and interact with him in various capacities during the course of my education. I remember him as having been a fellow graduate at B.C.High although he was a class or two ahead of my graduating class. Several interactions with him happened while he was finishing medical school when I was working on a Ph.D. program at BUSM. I used to proctor Board exams for the upper class med students at BU and got to know a few of them during these their grueling rites of passage. Denis was among them. After finishing my graduate degree I matriculated at BUSM. I would "bump into" Denis from time to time as I was rotating through the medical subspecialties and we would have a brief conversations in passing. During all these chance meetings over the years I always appreciated his friendliness toward me and advice offered regarding looking toward a career in a surgical subspeciality. I always found him to be almost like a big brother as he spent time discussing things with me in the few brief moments he would sacrifice as he was hurrying on to his next mission. Although he may not have considered me a "bosom buddy" he never failed to recognize and interact with me during our various comings and goings in the halls of BUSM.Obviously I have never forgotten him.
