DOUGLAS FORBES SMITH

SMITH, Douglas Forbes Son of Marjorie Benton Eldredge Smith and Clarke Lafayette Smith, died Saturday, October 25, 2025, after a short illness. He was 74. Doug was born in Miami, Florida, on January 5, 1951. He graduated from Miami Palmetto Senior High in 1968 and went on to the University of Florida. He attended Coast Guard Officer Candidate School and served three years at the Boston Coast Guard Station. As a Lieutenant in the Coast Guard, he travelled above the Arctic Circle. He completed Northeastern's Masters in Accounting program in 1977. He worked as a CPA at Arthur Anderson and subsequently at Thinking Machines in Boston. For the last 30 years, he was a consultant CFO to medical technology startups. He and Rosamond Smith met racing sailboats and were married in 1983. Doug leaves behind his wife and daughters, Cassandra Smith and Deirdre Smith. The family lived in Newburyport Massachusetts, where Doug became a fixture in the community. Doug lived life to the fullest, and reflected often on a life well-lived after his diagnosis. He loved the outdoors and spent his free time cycling, swimming with friends, and sailing. He was immensely proud of his family, including his four young grandchildren. He will be remembered by family and friends as a good listener, someone who always showed up to help in times of need. His easy smile and jokes will be missed. A Memorial for Doug will be held in Newburyport, Massachusetts, in the Spring.
