SMITH-PETERSEN, Douglas Roy A Life Well-Lived A devoted husband, father, grandfather, brother, and friend, Douglas Roy Smith-Petersen passed away peacefully, at home on April 26, at the age of 76. Doug was a thirty-two-year resident of Dover, MA, and grew up in West Newton. He attended Newton North High School, where he learned to play the clarinet. He was also a proud member of the high school's first lacrosse team. Doug attended Baldwin Wallace University, where he became Fraternity President of Sigma Phi Epsilon, and graduated with a degree in Economics. He furthered his education at Boston University with a Master's Degree in Business, and eventually earned his Chartered Financial Analyst (CFA) designation. Doug joined Fiduciary Trust Company of Boston in July of 1973, and after 42 years of hard work Doug became Fiduciary's seventh President and Chief Executive Officer. In 2014, Doug retired, having spent his entire working life with the exceptionally bright, hardworking and dedicated people of Fiduciary. Doug believed in public service and was a member of the Board of Trustees at Simmons University and was an overseer for the Boys & Girls Clubs of Boston. Beyond his professional and volunteer interests, Doug never found a sport he didn't like. For over a decade in his early years, he spent Saturdays playing competitive rugby. He also paid tribute to The Mystic River Rugby Club by singing and playing the harmonica to a song he composed called, "The C-Team Blues." Doug was actively engaged in his daughter's athletic career, coaching for the Dover-Sherborn girls soccer team and never missing any of his daughter's sports games. Golf became a passion that he enjoyed as often as possible in his retirement, especially when playing with his good buddies at The Sandy Burr Inner Club in Wayland. He was also adept at fishing, swimming, ice skating, skiing, sailing, scuba diving, basketball, and to top it off, he was also a very good dancer and could carry a tune. Doug, also known as "Smitty" and "Poppy," is survived by his wife of 45 years, Susan (Suki) White; daughter, Kathryn Smith-Petersen; son-in-law, Peter J. Gazzara, III; granddaughter, Olivia J. Gazzara; brother, Karl; sisters, Kristin (Smith-Petersen) and husband, Kirk Doyle, Nancy (Smith-Petersen) and husband, Richard Gallerani; niece, Kristin (Gallerani) and husband, Shawn Colton; nephew, Michael Gallerani and wife, Wendy (Clark). Doug was predeceased by his parents, Dr. Morten Smith-Petersen and Evelyn (Leeming) Smith-Petersen; stepfather, Stanley "Bud" Collinson; and sister, Susan (Smith-Petersen) Campbell; uncle, Porter Cushing Smith-Petersen; and cousin, David K. Smith-Petersen. Doug's departure leaves an unfillable void, yet we will find comfort in the memories of his friendship and unwavering dedication to friends and family and his commitment to putting hot sauce on all foods. Doug bravely battled pancreatic cancer. Those wishing to honor his memory may donate to the
Pancreatic Cancer Action Network to help fund research and support others facing this disease.
