Dear Family, I was just going through web sites and happened upon the death of Col. Burke. My deepest thoughts are with you. If I'm correct, didn't Col. Burke follow behind Col. Cross and become the Battle Group Commander of the 28th in Warner Kaserne. I was his Staff Car driver at that time.

The Black Lion Award would never have come into being without the advice and guidance of COL Ed Burke, who served on our board. What a great American! We can only hope that somehow, someone will step up and carry on his great work on behalf of the 28th Infantry Association. My prayers and deepest sympathy to his family. I truely admired what you had accomplished in your life. I was always so proud to tell people about my uncle the Colonel. You made me proud to be a Burke - thank you for that! You will be missed.

To Sally Burke and Family,
We extend our most heartfelt sympathies to you and your whole family at the passing of our Brother Ed. He was a true combat leader in Viet Nam because he was fearless and he cared for his men. That's why he was so successful then and that's why he was so successful as the President of the Society of the Big Red One and the 28th Infantry Regiment. He cared for us. He was a natural leader who never beat his own drum. He was a real giant among men and a true hero in my book. I am attaching a photo of the Big Red One Reunion in Detroit 2009. Ed is seated and in the middle of the photo. It was so good to be together again. I embrace him and all those who cared for him with all my heart.
