Edward TOMPKINS Obituary

TOMPKINS, Edward John Of Phoenix, Arizona, formerly of Newton, MA, died peacefully on October 14, 2024, at the age of 65. His loving partner of 30 years, Sharon Metzger, was by his side.

Edward was the son of the late Dr. William D. Tompkins. He is survived by his devoted mother, Claire M. Tompkins of Buzzards Bay, MA; his son, Thadeus W. Tompkins of Durham, CT; his grandson, Michael Tompkins of Warren, OH; and siblings, Linda Tompkins and husband Carl Sputore of Perth, Western Australia, Victoria (Tompkins) and husband Kambiz Heydari of Wellesley, MA, and Teddie (Tompkins) and husband Eugene Hunt of North Andover, MA; a niece; and several nephews.

Edward was a 1976 graduate of The Rivers School in Weston, MA, and then went on to complete a post graduate year at Deerfield Academy in Deerfield, MA, where he was voted MVP Football player of the year. He graduated from Harvard University in 1981 with a degree in Economics. At Harvard, he was an active member of the Harvard Rugby Football Club that won the National Championship, the first time that Harvard had won in forty years. He established many longtime friendships through the Rugby club, and they recently celebrated their 40th reunion, which Edward attended.

Edward was an avid skier and outdoorsman. Edward was proud of his annual hiking and ski trip to Tuckerman Ravine - Mt. Washington, NH. He once led a group on a hike up Mt. Rainier National Park in Washington State. He was a true New England Patriots fan and never missed a game, even during his many years living in the Southwest. He will be remembered for his warm and outgoing personality, kind heart and zest for life.

Dear Thompkins Family

I am deeply saddened to hear about the passing of Edward. Please accept my heartfelt condolences during this incredibly difficult time. Edward was a dear friend during our years together at The Rivers School, and the memories we shared are a cherished part of my life.

Edward was a remarkable individual-an outstanding student, a natural leader, and a person driven by an unwavering sense of purpose. His dedication and focus toward everything he pursued left an indelible impression on all of us who had the privilege to know him. Edward had a unique ability to inspire those around him, setting an example of excellence, resilience, and kindness.

I am grateful for the time we shared, and I know I am not alone in feeling a profound loss. He left a legacy that will continue to inspire all who knew him, and his memory will live on in our hearts.

Please know that you are in my thoughts, and I am here for anything you may need during this time.

With my deepest sympathy and respect, Bradway G. Widing

Ed was a great friend and teammate of mine at both Deerfield and Harvard.

Over the past 38 years we shared countless adventures, tons of laughs, ups and a few downs - mostly related to health, but Ed was always ready to rally with our band of brothers.

Ed was a star, and loved by all who knew him. He was an incredible athlete and would bring cheers from the crowded sidelines as he sprinted down the field at Deerfield football games and helped Harvard Rugby win the National Championship.

One of my favorite memories was following Ed down the slopes at Killington Mountain´s "Outer Limits", one of the longest and steepest mogul runs in the east and hearing the entire chairlift overhead erupt cheering Ed on as he put on an incredible show dancing through the moguls.

Sending deepest condolences to Ed´s partner Sharon, his entire family and many friends. Rest In Peace my friend.

I have only great memories of Eddie Tompkins. From being a college roommate at Harvard, to shared experiences in Lake Tahoe, Cape Cod, and on the golf course. When I was in the army, I traveled to Phoenix to hang with Eddie and play some golf and recreate. Last visited Eddie and Sharon in 2016 with my wife during a medical conference. His kindness, wit and sense of humor will be greatly missed. Eddie, I love you like a brother from another mother. You´ll be missed. May the road rise to meet you, and may God hold you in the palm of his hand. CREMINAL

Eddie and I were pre-teen besties! We played together almost every day. We even shared our baseball card collection.

Eddie was loving, funny, incredibly athletic and a terrible (but enthusiastic) drum player.

I will miss him dearly.

With a heavy heart I send my condolences to Mrs T and family. I´m so sorry for your loss. Eddie was a dear high school buddy and loyal friend. I´m grateful for all the wonderful HS memories we shared - football, baseball, 9th grade Spanish class, skiing, hiking and exploring New England. ET, you made high school fun. RIP old buddy, you´ll be missed.
