Eileen Schell Obituary

SCHELL, Eileen Conaghan 77, of Scottsdale, AZ, died January 19. She was born in Chicago, IL, graduated from New Trier High School and received a BA from Stanford University in 1956. While on a Fulbright Scholarship in the Netherlands, she married Allan Schell in 1957. By 1963, Eileen had her Masters and a PhD in Economic Geography from Boston University. Eileen was a cartographer with Erwin Raisz before founding her own market research consultancy in 1966, providing site selection and evaluation for retailers such as Grossmans, and most New England banks. She served on boards of directors and taught at Harvard Business School, until she was tapped to become Secretary of Consumer Affairs for Massachusetts from 1979 to 1983. Eileen was an active advocate for social change, including fundraising for Michael Dukakis. She gave her time and talents championing education for disadvantaged students of color. In recent years, she taught in Phoenix public schools and volunteered in the Sky of Love orphanage in Ghana. Eileen is survived by two children: Alice-Rosalind Schell and Cynthia Schell. Arrangements private.

Eileen and I were friends at Stanford and fellow geography students there. I am saddened to learn of her death. I hadn't seen her in many years but remembered her fondly.

I am saddened to learn of Eileen's death. Eileen was a close friend and colleague at Boston University in the late 1960s where she taught cartography and was an inspiration to young geographers entering the work place other than academia. She was a strong advocate for women's rights and equal opportunity in the work place. Eileen's enthusiasm for life, her energy, and her humor will be missed by all who knew her.

I WAS SORRY TO LEARN OF EILEEN'S DEATH. WE WORKED TOGETHER FOR FOUR YEARS WHEN I WAS AN EXECUTIVE AT GROSSMAN'S AND SHE WAS A TALENTED AND CREATIVE MARKETING ANALYST. SHE WAS ENERGETIC, ENTHUSIASTIC, ARTICULATE AND BRILLIANT. IT WAS A PLEASURE TO HAVE HER ON THE TEAM.
