ELEANOR DALL Obituary

DALL, Eleanor Ann (Gifun) Of Arlington, age 95, passed away at home, on February 10, 2025, Beloved wife of the late Robert Dall. Ellie grew up in Jamaica Plain, Boston. Her parents-the late Mary (Antosca) Gifun and Alfred Gifun-were the children of Italian immigrants and Ellie and her siblings were part of a close-knit extended family. She grew up in a troubled world that endured first the Great Depression and then World War II, but the Gifuns pulled together through those difficult years and there were carefree times as well: cousins to play with and adventures to be had (Ellie and friends set up an elaborate system of signals to make sure they got tickets to see a young Frank Sinatra at the Paramount). After high school, she entered the working world and did some traveling-including a cross-country motorcycle trip (albeit as a passenger). Back in Boston, Ellie met a young man named Bob Dall, started spending time with him and eventually married him! They raised their two children in Arlington and as they approached school age, Ellie realized the walk would be too much for a kindergartner-she'd have to, at last, secure a driver's license (remember the part about her being a passenger?), but she handled it the way she did everything else: with a lack of fuss and great determination bordering on stubbornness. (One of Ellie's refrigerator magnets: "Never try to out-stubborn your mother.") When her kids were a little older, Ellie returned to work and made her niche at the J.B. Sash and Door Company, where she spent 45 years before retiring at age 91. In her later decades, her family-which saw a new generation with the birth of her grandchildren in the 2000s-was her primary focus and source of joy, and her "work family" was close to her heart as well. She knew what mattered in life, and if you were in her life, what mattered was you. Ellie was preceded in death by her husband; her brothers, Richard J. and Frederick V. Gifun; and her sister, Dorothy M. (Gifun) Battista. She is survived by her son, Robert D. Dall and daughter-in-law, Margaret Ann Brady of Cambridge; her daughter, Laurie A. Greene and son-in-law, Kevin T. Greene; grandsons, Daniel R. Greene and Michael W. Greene of Hanover; and her sister, Mary Ann Gifun of Wellesley; as well as cousins, nieces and nephews. There will be a private Interment service in the coming days. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to St. Jude Children's Research Hospital (www.stjude.org).
