Elizabeth Federman Obituary

FEDERMAN, Elizabeth (Buckley) Of Belmont, November 14, 2008. Wife of Daniel Federman, MD. Born in Nashua, NH, the daughter of the late Charles and Mary Buckley. Raised in Billerica and New Bedford. Trained in nursing at Massachusetts General Hospital and, almost immediately on receiving her cap, was appointed the youngest head nurse in MGH history. She educated generations of student nurses, Harvard medical students and MGH interns and residents in scientific and humane medicine. She was accepted by house staff as a peer in diagnostic acuity and therapeutic sensibility. In later years she combined research nursing, including a very important discovery, with being a dedicated mother and grandmother. Was recently honored at Harvard Medical School by alumna paying tribute to "Betty's support of young physicians, especially women". Survived by two daughters, Lise Federman of Belmont and Carolyn Zaucha and son-in-law Albert of Chicago; a brother Charles Buckley of Vieira, FL; three grandchildren, Daniel, Julia and Michael; cousins, nieces and nephews. A Memorial Service is planned for December 13th at 11:00AM in the MGH Chapel. Both Betty and Dan were such a big part of my growing up, including years after I might have been considered to be an actual grownup. She made us a lot of cookie dough and always had a good serving of no-nonsense advise to go with it. She was my other mom through high school, college and medical school. I will miss her deeply even though we had not had the chance to be together for some time and I hope she is at peace now. You are all in my thoughts at this difficult time.
