1924 - 2018

MISHLER, Elliot Elliot Mishler of Cambridge died March 21 at the age of 93. He was predeceased by his wife Anita Mishler and is survived by his partner of 35 years, Vicky Steinitz; his sons and their families: Paul Mishler, Gerrie Casey, their son Max Mishler, and his wife Shauna Sweeney, and Mark Mishler, Renee Hariton, and their sons Raphael and Nikolai; Vicky's daughters Rebecca Steinitz and Zevey Steinitz, and their husbands and children; and his younger sister Audrey Jones. Elliot was a Professor in the Department of Social Psychiatry at Harvard Medical School as well as a critical scholar, photographer, and political activist. His household was a stew of ideas, politics, poetry, music, and social theory, all motivated by strong love and compassion for the world. With his students and his family, he argued by asking questions, and he taught us all that to be human was to make the world more just. He took his sons to their first demonstrations against the war in Vietnam in 1965, and he continued to fight against racism, militarism, and injustice throughout his life, including holding family reunions at marches against the War in Iraq. The funeral will be Sunday March 25 at 1 p.m. at Temple Shir Tikvah, 34 Vine Street, Winchester.
