EUGENE BERMAN Obituary

Berman, Eugene B. Noted bankruptcy lawyer and civic leader Eugene B. Berman of Enfield and Woodmont, CT died peacefully at home on September 14 after a long and productive life. He was born in Holyoke, MA on June 1, 1928, the son of Gustave and Lillian Berman. Berman was a graduate of Williston Academy, the University of Nebraska and Boston University School of Law, and a member of the Hampden County, MA and American Bar Associations, the bar of the U.S. Supreme Court and the U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals and several U.S. District Courts. He authored the 1972 book "How to Collect a Debt" and served as President of the Commercial Law League of America in 1980. In 2009 the Massachusetts Bar Association and Massachusetts Lawyers Weekly honored him for his work for the victims of the foreclosure crisis and to bring judicial foreclosure to Massachusetts. Berman is survived by his loving partner Patricia Kozaczka and her granddaughter Taylor, by his son, E. Bruce Berman, Jr. and his wife Patricia, by his daughter Caren Berman Nemtzow, her husband Andy and their sons Zachary and Alexander, and numerous cousins, nieces and nephews. Eugene Berman left the world a better place for his having lived, achieving immortality in the hearts and minds of those who survive him, especially the many descendants of Chonan and Khasia Berman. There will be a celebration of Gene's life on Friday, September 18, 2015 at 11:30 at the Hillcrest Park Cemetery Mausoleum at 895 Parker St. in Springfield, followed by a reception at Sinai Temple at 1100 Dickinson St, in Springfield, MA. Berman requested that those wishing to honor his memory honor his values with contributions to the American Civil Liberties Union, the Southern Poverty Law Center and Americans United for Separation of Church and State.

I worked with Atty Berman at Kamberg, Berman PC from 1988 to 1992. Left the firm and moved on with my life. How weird is if that I just thought of looking him up on the Internet tonight (10/14/15), only to read about his sad demise. He was a wonderful employer and I have very fond memories of him. I worked with the firm through trying financial times, but he was always generous and truly wanted to do the best by his employees. I will always have fond memories of him. May God rest his soul in Peace.

I was a paralegal at KB&H from 1973-1977 while attending the evening division of WNEC Law School. EBB was a profound influence on me and I have employed many of the things I learned from him throughout my career as a lawyer. Rest in Peace, EBB.

I was saddened when I heard of Gene's passing. I knew Gene for many years from when I worked at the District Court in Spfld. (1953-1955) and got to know him better when I was a legal secretary at 31 Elm St. He was a great gentleman and will be greatly missed.

My heartfelt condolences to Patricia, Taylor and all of Gene's family. I was an associate at Kamberg, Berman PC from 1992-1995. Gene taught me so much about the practice of law and to enjoy life. Several weeks ago Gene posted on Legacy.com his condolences for the recent loss of my mother. That generated email correspondence between us, and ultimately, I stopped by for a lovely visit just 4 weeks ago. I am so glad that I was able to see him and talk about the days at Kamberg, Berman.

Gene Berman cared about people. It was a pleasure to spend time with Gene and Pat because they were always so happy together. It was truly an honor to know this kind, funny and brilliant man and his loving family. I will never forget the kindness and care of my beloved sister by Gene, Caren, Andy and Bruce at Brigham in 2011. Gene Berman did make a difference--he did make the world a better place for his having lived. He will never be forgotten. Rest in peace Bro.

Deepest sympathy to the family and Pat. I worked for him for over 20 years and he was a "great" boss and later became a great friend. When dining out at new restaurants with Gene, Pat and Neil, discussions always started with family then to current events or politics, where he could usually sway you to his way of thinking. We have lost a wonderful man that will not be forgotten.

The core of Eugene's name, Gene, is also my middle name for him. His passionate research and the time he devoted to the GENEALOGY of the Berman family resonates throughout the entire family. My continuing research into family trees began as a seed he planted and I am forever grateful for what I learned from Gene regarding the importance of family ties. His sign off in countless e-mails and correspondence was "Familially, Gene." Rest in peace.

My condelences to the Berman family during this difficult time. Our Mom, Jean McKie, worked for Attorneys Kamburg, Berman and Hendel as a legal secretary. She initially came on board as a "Kelly Girl" temp and was honored when asked to become an employee of the firm. She was first a Mom, wife and grandmother but her career at this law firm and the professional relationships she built were a source of pride for her and also for us. I remember meeting her downtown for lunch at Steiger's Tea Room followed by a quick visit to Johnson's Bookstore. She passed away seven years ago and we were proud to include K, B and H in her obituary.
May Eugene, as she called him, rest in peace.

Gene was one of the leading lights of the bankruptcy field. He was extremely bright and creative. He also was a nice man and that is unfortunately not always consistent with being a great lawyer. It worked for Gene though. I will never forget one of the most important days I had as a young lawyer. That was the day that I felt I had earned Gene's respect. I remember the details vividly and it means as much today as it did so many years ago. I regret that I am scheduled to be away on Friday and I wish I could participate in the celebration of Gene's life. His was a very worthwhile life and well worth celebrating.

Bruce and Caren - Ellie and I are so sad to hear of your Dad's passing. There is no CLLA memory more vivid that the time we came home with your Mom and Da and went touring in the old stationwagen, only to break down (on a Sunday) and end up on a flat bed tow truck, which then broke down and there we were, in the car, on the truck, being towed by another tow truck. All because your Dad ignored the little red light on the dash...Priceless. There was no one like him.
