Gene was one of the loves of my life. A mentor, and a great friend, he helped me through many dark passages, and we shared many bright moments together. Bigger than life, and generous to a fault, he made everyone around him feel special. One of his students scratched a remark on a desk saying... GENE STAVIS IS GOD! And, may I add, he was God with a sense of humor.
Gene and I talked often about films, and I asked him if he was selective about collecting, and he said no, that every single thing ever put on film should be saved.
