GEORGE BROWN Obituary

BROWN, George A. Of Newton, November 10, 2021, age 93, after a long illness. Born to Ben and Ann Brown on March 10, 1928, in Roxbury, MA. He was the oldest of three siblings, predeceased by his brother Leonard. George was a longtime resident of Newtonville where he resided with his wife Jane. Loving father of Caroline Greenblatt of Framingham and Abby Brown of Weston. Grandfather of Andrew and Zachary Greenblatt. George attended Boston Latin School, Harvard University and Harvard Law School. He served two years as a Marine during the Korean War, and on his return worked as a lawyer for the Thomas Joyce Law Firm. George went on to sell mutual funds, and a few years later founded Brown and Company, the first discount brokerage company. This company was the highlight of George's life and the business grew to 16 branches. George's wit and wisdom permeated this endeavor, and his dry sense of humor was displayed when he played the part of Max the Trader. His staff was encouraged to feel that they worked with him, not for him. George was a kind and gentle man. A private funeral service was held for the family. Shiva will be held at his late residence. Friday from 3pm – 5pm, Saturday 1pm – 5pm and Sunday 1pm – 5pm.

What a kind, smart, generous man!
I had the privilege of working for Brown and Company in the 1980's....when George used to ride his bike to work! What a time that was. I was charmed and surprised on Sanibel Island years later: A man was approaching us on a nature trail wearing a Brown and Company tee shirt, and I thought, I am going to tell this man I worked there......and it was George with his lovely wife Jane! Such a nice memory.
My condolences to his family.

George was one of the best people I have had the pleasure of meeting. He helped me in my career so I could support my family and yes as employees we all felt we were a part of Brown & Company. We worked with him and he always rewarded folks for their hard work. The world needs more like him. He had a wonderful sense of humor and I will always remember him fondly

I would like to express my deepest condolences to Caroline, Russ and all of George´s loved ones. I worked with George at Brown & Company from 1996 until his retirement and I remember those days fondly. He was a kind, very funny, straight-forward man and a living legend. He hosted the best Friday office parties and treated everyone well. As one colleague once said "This is the last bastion of corporate freedom". Rest in peace George.

My heart is sad to hear this. I worked for George in the early 1980's. He was the best to work with - always jovial with great care and consideration for the company, the customers, and always the employees. He earned our loyalty and will be missed greatly.
