As a fifth grader at St. Columbkille´s School in Brighton in 1968, I was one of many kids who enjoyed the young guy teaching American History. So cool! A teacher who was not a nun, made school time fun, and recognized our individual personalities. Mr. Pierce was a descendant of President Franklin Pierce, we were told. He lived in Belmont on Cross St. For years I have made my wife chuckle when driving between Brighton and Belmont, saying something like: "One of these days, we have to drop in on George Harrison Pierce Junior." She would roll her eyes, but I would recall Mr. Pierce with the same fondness I felt back in my childhood. I´m guessing that I last saw George when he was about 24... and that´s the first time I´ve ever referred to my long-ago history and home room teacher by his first name. As you can see by this recollection, the kid to whom he gifted a book and wrote in its cover "To Peter, the best history student in grade 5," has a nugget of Mr. Pierce in his indelible memory. And I still have the book! My sincere condolences and heartfelt sorrow are yours. My gift to the family of one of my childhood beacons of light.

I am sorry to hear of George´s passing. Even though we lost touch over the years, I enjoyed teaching with him in Cambridge and our times Mary, Ed and I spent with you as couple young couples in Lexington.
