Glenn Tinder Obituary

TINDER, Professor Glenn Glenn Tinder, Author and Professor Emeritus of Political Science at the University of Massachusetts.

Professor Glenn Tinder, age 100, a long-term resident of Lincoln, MA, died peacefully on January 19 th in Bridgewater, NJ. Mr. Tinder taught political science at the University of Massachusetts for most of his career, first at the Amherst campus and then in Boston.

Mr. Tinder was born and raised in Bishop, CA. Growing up under the majestic eastern face of Mt. Tom in the Sierra Nevada mountain range was an enduring influence on his life. He graduated from Pomona College, Pomona, CA, and received his Masters and Ph.D. degrees from the University of California at Berkeley.

He was the author of eight books and many articles in the fields of political theory and philosophy. Among his books were a college textbook, Political Thinking: The Perennial Questions, and The Political Meaning of Christianity. He published Liberty: Rethinking an Imperiled Ideal when he was 84. He was a World War II veteran, having served on the LST 924 in the South Pacific.

He was predeceased by his son, Evan; and his wife of 67 years, Gloria Nidett Tinder; and a first cousin who was like a brother, Robert Frame. He leaves behind his son, Galen (LaShell); granddaughter, Brienne (Thomas); and grandson, Brett (Sarah). The family will scatter his ashes in Bishop, CA.

Professor Tinder was a brilliant, thoughtful, and challenging teacher. His classes raised the most important questions, not only about politics, but about the meaning of life. His lectures and his writings relentlessly sought to uncover the human good. He changed my life for the better.
