HARRY MCCRACKEN Obituary

McCRACKEN, Harry B. Jr. Of Norwood, formerly of Westwood, a longtime member of the United States Golf Association's Regional Affairs Committee and one of New England's most dedicated golf representatives, died peacefully on October 18, 2019 at the age of 94. Beloved husband of the late Jane (Needham) McCracken. Loving father of Peter T. McCracken and his wife Cheryl of Foxborough and the late Richard T. and Harry B. McCracken, III. Cherished grandfather of Samantha McCracken and Peter McCracken, Jr. and his wife Lizzie. Devoted brother of the late Jean Leahy and Lorna Boyle. Also survived by several nieces and nephews.

Harry McCracken, one of the most recognizable figures in the local golf scene, has been a fixture at Mass Golf, New England Golf and USGA events since 1969 when he first became a part of the Mass Golf Executive Committee. He rose to the title of Mass Golf president in 1984 and later began work with the New England Golf Association, which serves the golf needs for all of New England. Up until his passing, he served as the Executive Secretary/Treasurer of the New England Golf Association - a position he held since 1987 - where he oversaw all facets of the association's operations.

Having already received numerous awards and recognition from nearly every top golf organization in the span of his career, McCracken, Jr. added to his legacy in 2017, when the Massachusetts Amateur Championship Stroke Play Medalist Award was named in his honor. That award appropriately connected the longest-running Mass Golf Championship with one of its longest-tenured representatives and will continue the legacy for as long as the Massachusetts Golf Association is in existence.

In addition to the creation of the Harry B. McCracken, Jr. Stroke Play Medalist Award, its namesake had previously been honored with the 1995 USGA Ike Grainger Award, the 2007 USGA Joe Dey Award and the 2005 New England PGA George S. Wemyss Award, among others. Mass Golf honored him in 1994 with the Frank Sellman Distinguished Service Award (the highest honor given to a Mass Golf volunteer).

McCracken became a member of the USGA Regional Affairs Committee in 1989, and his responsibilities included procuring qualifying sites for the U.S. Open, U.S. Senior Open, U.S. Amateur, U.S. Mid-Amateur and U.S. Junior Amateur. He also assisted in landing sites for U.S. Amateur Public Links, qualifying as well as assigning Rules officials to those sites while acting as the official in charge at most of the qualifiers.

McCracken joined Charles River Country Club as a junior golfer in 1936, and over the years has served three terms on the Board of Governors, including 10 years as vice president and treasurer. Since 1996, the club has annually held the McCracken Cup, a tournament named in Harry's honor that brings together some of New England's best low-handicap golfers.

Harry is a graduate of Bowdoin College and served his country as a Sargent in the United States Army During WWII.

Visiting Hours will be held in the Holden, Dunn and Lawler Funeral Home, 55 High Rock St. (off Route 109), WESTWOOD, on Tuesday, Oct. 22, from 4:00 to 7:00pm.

A Funeral Service will be celebrated in St. John's Episcopal Church, 95 Deerfield Ave., Westwood, on Wednesday, Oct.23, at 11:30am. Relatives and friends are invited to attend. Interment Walnut Hills Cemetery, Brookline.

Peter,
Although it's been many many years since I've seen you, I just read about your Dad's passing and wanted to say how sorry I am for your loss. When I worked at Union Federal in Westwood, you, your Mom, and sometimes your Dad, would often come into the bank to visit with Bobbie Newman. I enjoyed seeing you guys, and delighted in Jane's always effervescent cheerful personality. She and Bobbie would 'catch up' and their happiness at seeing each other would bubble over. Your Mom and Dad seemed so content and happy. I was sorry to read that you've lost both of them, and your brothers too. I remember going outside, when you'd stop by the bank, to check out your snazzy cars that always smelled so good,. Peter, I am sorry that your Mom and Dad have passed. They were a joy to know!

Peter and Family

So sorry for the loss of both your Mom and Dad these past few months. Farm Lane will never be the same. I will miss sharing English murder mystery books with Jane and watching Harry greet our Dog first. You were blessed to have them so long and so were we.

Sincerely,
Lori & Paul OBrien

Harry represented the heart and soul of golf here in New England. Case in point...year after year he generously gave of his time to the Boston Open, always held over the second weekend of August. The tournament supported a great cause, was well intentioned, but for the most part a bit rag tag and disorganized. Never seemed to bother Harry. He was always there, helping out with the rules and officiating on a prime weekend when he could have been enjoying his own leisure time. His contributions to tournament golf will be sorely missed. He leaves behind a noble legacy. Thanks for all you did, Harry!

Dear Peter and family,

The entire Kelley family sends their deepest sympathy to you on the loss of your Dad. He led a great life and was loved by many including our Mom and Dad. Their friendship was so strong and Dad always had a funny story to tell about Harry following a casual golf game or officiating a tournament. We were all so honored when he served as a pallbearer for Dad's funeral.
All of you will be in our thoughts and prayers.

God Speed Harry! I already started missing my grumbled morning greeting of "what in H*** are you doing here" at the Foxhill complex when your desk was removed from your office. But behind that gruff exterior and gravely voice was a kind heart and generous soul. Peter, Cheryl and family I feel for your loss, but having Harry around to share his life experiences for so many years is truly a gift. We may not have agreed with him...and certainly not him with us...but it was an honor to have the opportunity to call him a friend. May Harry and Jane now continue their journey together and Harry rest in peace as you were truly a good man!

As a Past President of NEGA I have many fond memories of Harry. First met him over 20 years ago as a NH Golf Association rep working a Rhode Island Tournament. Over the years, working many tournaments, and various meetings with him, I will always remember the warm greetings from him and also the many phone calls from him while wintering in Florida. He always called to remind me to come home in time for his spring meeting. He will be fondly remembered as the Face of the NEGA. I am proud to have called him my friend. RIP Harry. Peace.

We were lucky to have Harry & Jane as next door neighbors the past 6 years. We enjoyed their company very much. Harry was smart, funny and knowledgeable about many topics. Harry was a big reader and his porch illuminated at night as he pored through the newspaper and books. He generously loaned books he recommended. Avid dog lovers, Harry & Jane kept dog treats in their kitchen for our dogs and other dogs. Our dog still looks quizzically as we walk past their home, waiting to see them. She loved to run to Harry who greeted her warmly. We miss both Jane & Harry whose devotion to each other was an exceptional gift to see. Godspeed!

To Peter and Family so sorry for your loss. I met Harry when I was 21 and he was 92, and we had a special relationship. From driving around with him at The Country Club, too bringing him to his last NEGA championship at Quechee, the memories I made with him this year and last were special. Nobody vouched for me quite like Harry did and I will never forget what he did for me. I will miss hearing whaddaya say Stevie and so many other things about him. I feel so fortunate to have gotten to know him these last couple of years. Rest In Peace my friend, thanks for everything.
