Just wanted to say Jann and I still think about J. Walter, and just a few weeks ago drove through his old neighborhood, remembering he told us about the street that goes overboard with Christmas lights: and sure enough they still out on a good show. He was running coverage in Newport when we first met, and we continue to appreciate what he brought to our lives!

Dear Green family,
I am so sorry for the loss of your husband/dad/grandpa. My family is all over the place now in terms of location, and the information just reached me. Our dad, Warren J. McCabe, who retired a year before yours, spoke fondly of Mr. Green and praised his skills to the roof. Our dad died quietly in May of 2007. In sympathy,
Warren's wife, Connie, and daughters Justine, Paula, and Maryann

J. Walter will remain a vivid part of AP history -- a skilled and persistent photographer, a talented editor and manager, mentor to a generation of photojournalists. He was a joy to work with when I was the AP bureau chief in Boston and a valued friend for many years afterward. He will be much missed. Jennie, Betsy joins me in extending deepest condolences.

Jennie, I am truly sorry for your loss. You and Walter were never too far apart. Linden Ponds was better for having you both amongst us. His loving granddaughter, Michelle, was a class act at LP also. What happy memories you all must have and please, cherish them.

J.Walter taught me so much about sailing photography. The summer of '83, covering the America's Cup in Newport, is filled with wonderful memories of working with him.

J. Walter was my boss when I worked for the Associated Press as a photographer in Boston. He was a legend, told the best stories about travelling with the Queen, and was an excellent mentor. Stanley Cups, the annual Boston Marathon, presidential visits, World Cup skiing, the America's Cup in Newport, J. Walter had been there, done that, and knew all the little moves that would let us win front pages all over the world. He livened up any room he walked into, and will be fondly missed.
