JAMES O'BRIEN Obituary

O'BRIEN, James W. "Jim" Of Hingham, MA, passed away peacefully, surrounded by his loving family, on December 8, 2023. He was 77 years old. Born in Boston, he was the son of the late William and Helen O'Brien (Davis). Jim grew up in Weymouth, MA, and spent most of his adult life on the South Shore, raising two children in Hingham. He graduated from Boston College and began his career at Thermo Electron Corporation, which led to work commercializing medical technology at Harvard Medical School and the Texas Heart Institute. Jim spent the second half of his career in the investment banking industry, where he was a principal at Beacon Hill Financial, which served as an advisor to many of the world's leading private equity investors. He continued this work at Bare Cove Financial, a firm he founded in 1998. Beloved husband of Candace O'Brien of Hingham. Loving father of Scott O'Brien and his wife, Laura of Arlington, VA, and Meredith Tierney and her husband, Ryan of Newburyport, MA. Cherished grandfather "Pa" to Harper, Julianne, Riley and Tatum. Jim was committed to his family and would do anything to support his children, from attending lacrosse and soccer games across New England to obtaining his pilot's license. He was passionate about providing educational opportunities to those in need and served on the Board of Trustees at Thayer Academy and Rhodes College. Jim's family is grateful to Dr. Matthew Weinstock and the Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center staff for their care and compassion. In lieu of flowers, contributions in memory of James O'Brien may be made to Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center at www.bidmc.org/giving or by check to "Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center" with "BIDMC Translational Lymphoma Research Program" in the memo line. I will always treasure my friendship with Jim. We first met shortly after Scott entered Rhodes College. Initially serving as a Parent Trustee, he became a leading member of the Board, chairing our Finance Committee. Our friendship grew over the years and I came to appreciate even more what made him such an exceptional man. Jim was totally devoted to his family. We never talked long without my being reminded about his love for Candy and their children and grandchildren. They were always his top priority. It was a great blessing to have such a wonderful man as a friend.

Candy- So sorry to hear we lost our BC buddy this week. Our prayers are with you. I really admired Jimmy´s stoicism and how courageously he faced his treatments. Marty Gavin and I thoroughly enjoyed our quarterly lunches with Jim. We loved his stories about you, Scott and Meredith. He was so happy to be "back on the fields" watching the grandkids. You all meant the world to him. Linda and I are thinking of you all.....
