SHEA, Janet Ann Age 90, of Portland, Maine, formerly of Tenants Harbor, Maine and Newton, Massachusetts, passed away on October 12, 2025, surrounded by her family and dear friends. Janet faced her recent illness and eventual end of life with courage, humor, and grace.
Born in Boston, she was the daughter of James and Mary Lennon. A lifelong learner and gifted writer, Janet earned degrees from Rutgers College and Boston College and, at age 70, an MFA in Creative Nonfiction from Spalding University. Her essays and poetry appeared in The Christian Science Monitor, The Witness Magazine and Liguorian.
Janet and her late husband, John Shea, raised five children in Wellesley and Newton, where their home overflowed with laughter, music and more than a little bit of chaos. Lifelong friendships were central to her life, especially with Diane and Ed Bedrosian and their family, whose bond with the Sheas spanned six decades.
In 1999, Janet and John moved to Tenants Harbor and ran The Pointed Fir, a beloved bed-and-breakfast known for good food, conversation and community.
For over forty years, Janet met regularly with her writing partners, Carolyn Coman and Susan Monsky, nurturing the creative spark in each other.
Janet's children survive her: Mary Shea (Waverly Deutsch), William Shea (Karen Shea), Paul Shea (Mary Beth Benson), David Shea and Alice Shea (Bruce Davis); her grandchildren, Jordan, Kaitlyn and Owen; her great-grandchildren, Louis and Josephine; her dear cousins and fifteen nieces and nephews.
In accordance with her wishes, there will be no Service.
