Janice Waters Obituary

WATERS, Sr. Janice, SNDdeN Sister Janice Waters, 96, died Monday, March 10, 2025, at the Notre Dame Long Term Care Center, Worcester. She was born in West Newton, daughter of Harold J. and Elizabeth (Uniacke) Waters. She entered the Sisters of Notre Dame de Namur in 1947 as Sr. Margaret Cornelia. She graduated from Emmanuel College with a Bachelor of Arts degree in Biology-Chemistry and a Master's degree in Urban Pastoral Ministry. Sister Janice taught in several of the Notre Dame affiliated schools in the greater Boston area and Worcester, including St. Joseph's School, Boston; Our Lady of the Angels, Worcester; St. Bernard School, Newton; Notre Dame Academy, Hingham and St. Augustine School, Boston. She became Vice Principal and then Principal at Cardinal Cushing High School, South Boston. In 1975, Sister Janice began her ministry in Leadership as Provincial of the Boston Province, until 1981, and again from 1993 to 1997. Her ministries also included Director of Religious Education, Saugus, MA, grant writer and Coordinator of Volunteers for Project Hope, Boston and Coordinator for the Sisters of Notre Dame Associates Program. In 2004, Sr. Janice volunteered with the Sisters in Johannesburg, South Africa. Sister Janice leaves many nieces, nephews, grandnieces, grandnephews, 3 great-grandnieces, great-grandnephews, and her Sisters in religion. She was predeceased by her brother, Barry J. Waters; and her sisters, Marcia A. Murphy, and Elizabeth C. Roth. Sister Janice's Funeral will be held Friday, March 21, in the Notre Dame du Lac Chapel, 555 Plantation St., Worcester, with a Visitation Period at 1 p.m., followed by sharing of memories at 1:30 p.m. and a Mass at 2 p.m. The Burial will be in Notre Dame du Lac Cemetery. Athy Memorial Home is directing arrangements (www.athymemorial.com). Memorial donations may be made to the Sisters of Notre Dame de Namur, 351 Broadway, Everett, MA 02149.

My fondest memories of CCHS was helping out in the office with Sr. Janice and Mrs. Murphy they were such a great team. Sr. Janice was ALWAYS so sweet and kind, not to mention fair. She was always smiling and happy for you when you were doing well. Condolences to her entire family and friends. May you find peace and comfort from all your wonderful memories of such a beautiful woman. 96! Not bad Sr. Janice and thank you for being such a wonderful mentor. Rest in Peace

Sri. Janice was one of my favorites. She was always patient and understanding. Her door was always open to receive anyone that just needed to talk. She will always be remembered. Rest in peace Sr. Janice.
