JOAQUIM "JACK" MANUEL Jr.

MANUEL, Joaquim "Jack" Jr. Passed away on July 7, 2023, in Lexington at the age of 92. He was born on January 19, 1931, in Cranston, Rhode Island to Joaquim Manuel, Sr. and Maria Rosa dos Santos Manuel. His parents were both from Xartinho (Santarem), Portugal. His father moved to the United States in 1919; his mother in 1921. Jack grew up in a close-knit Portuguese immigrant community in Warwick, RI. Jack graduated from Nelson Aldrich High School in Warwick in 1949. He then studied piano at the New England Conservatory in Boston. Jack was hired to be the Director of Music at Westbrook High School in Maine in 1962, a position he held until 1968. During that time, he earned both his Master's in Education (M.Ed.) from University of Connecticut at Storrs in 1966, and then Doctor of Musical Arts (DMA) from the School of Fine Arts, Boston University in 1968. Jack taught in the School of Education at Boston University (1968 to 1977) and at Northeastern University (1974 to 2004). He was also appointed the director of the Rhode Island Governor's School for Gifted Students at the University of Rhode Island in 1969, and at Salve Regina College in 1970. A long-time resident of Westford, Massachusetts (1968-2004), he lived in Lexington for the past nineteen years. Jack was predeceased by his parents and younger brother Silvino. He leaves behind his beloved wife of 68 years, Barbara (Lagomarsino), originally of Somerville; three sons: Mark and wife Rosemary of Andover; Paul and wife Anne Marie of Washington, DC, and David and wife Anne of Lexington. Jack also leaves behind seven loving grandchildren. A Memorial Mass will be offered at a later date. Jack was very close friends of the former principal of Boston College High School, Rev. James C. O'Brien, SJ, and he sent his three sons to BC High.
