JOEL DOUGLAS Obituary

DOUGLAS, Joel P. Age 88 of Plymouth, formerly of Belmont, died June 4, 2022. He is survived by his wife of 63 years, Nancy (Goodwin) Douglas. Joel was born in Boston, September 5, 1933, son of the late Anne (Cohen) and Abraham Douglas. He attended Haverhill High School. After graduating from The University of Massachusetts, Amherst he attended The Harvard School of Dental Medicine, graduating magna cum laude in 1959. He continued his dental training and received his post doctorate degree in orthodontics from HSDM. He was past President of OKU, The National Dental Honor Society. He served as assistant Clinical Professor of Orthodontics at Harvard and the Forsyth Dental Center and was honored for his 25 years of service by President Derek Bok. He practiced Orthodontics in Belmont until his retirement in 2000. He was the founder and first President of the Minuteman Chapter of the American Cancer Society. He served two years as President of the Massachusetts Association of Orthodontics. Joel is credited with winning the slogan contest for the new Massachusetts license plate "Spirit of America." He also originated the idea and design to commission the "Welcome to Belmont" signs. He loved watching all Red Sox games and had a passion for cooking. In addition to his wife, he leaves his two sons, Mark of Stoughton and his wife Gail, and Scott of Denver; his daughter Dr. JoAnn Douglas of Denver; also, his sister Carolyn Klein of Falmouth; sister-in-law Betsy Hashem and her husband Joseph of Santa Barbara; as well as many nieces and nephews. Nancy, I read in the Boston Globe this morning about Joel's passing. I am very sorry for your loss and wish you well. He was a very nice man.
