JOHN D. BOORAS

1932 - 2025

BOORAS, John D. Of Winthrop, Massachusetts, passed away on May 14, 2025, at the age of 92. He was the beloved son of Greek immigrants Demetrios and Pauline Booras; and cherished brother to the late Paul Booras, Stella Thomas, and Peter Booras. John was a devoted father to Mary and Barbara Booras; father-in-law to Matthew Mahowald; and a proud new grandfather to Kai Marlan Booras Mahowald. He was loved by his late wife Roseann (Cullen) Booras; and former wife Deborah Peretti. John held a special place in his heart for his many nieces and nephews. John was a passionate athlete and accomplished marathoner, winning numerous races, including the Atlantic City Marathon and earning multiple sub-3-hour Boston Marathon finishes. As an early course measurer for road races and longtime Boston Athletic Association member, he helped shape New England's running community. Many in Winthrop will remember John as their gentle and reliable postman, and as an active churchgoer at the United Methodist Church of Winthrop. He also generously supported numerous charities, volunteered for cultural institutions, and cultivated a vast photographic archive of local history. Above all, John was most proud of the family he built and the values he passed down - quiet kindness, humility, and the joy of sharing good food. Family and friends are cordially invited to attend the Visitation from the Ernest P. Caggiano and Son Funeral Home, 147 Winthrop Street, WINTHROP, on Sunday, May 18, from 4:00–7:00 pm. A Celebration of Life will be announced in the coming weeks.
