JOHN CAULFIELD Obituary

CAULFIELD, John L (Jack) 66, of New Haven and Fairfield Beach, CT died Sunday June 25, 2017 in Needham, MA after an 11 month struggle with cancer. Like his father, Jack was a people person, he was a caring, supportive, thoughtful and kind friend to many. He always made you feel that you were the most important person in the world. A great listener as well as story teller he had an easy smile and was always there with a note of encouragement or card with his distinctive handwriting. He will be missed dearly by family and friends alike. Jack was born in Boston in 1950 to Thomas E. Caulfield and Dorothy F. Caulfield (Bickford). He grew up in Newton and Needham, MA. He graduated from Needham High School in 1968 and from UMass Amherst with a BA in History in 1972. He then served in the US Navy 1973-1977 as an Arabic linguist for the NSA, studying at the Defense Language Institute in Monterey, CA and later stationed in Spain and Greece. After his service he settled first in New Haven and then in Fairfield Beach, CT were he lived the majority of his adult life. Jack was named after his father's brother, his uncle Lt. John L. Caulfield, who was killed in action supporting the D-Day landing in France in 1944. Both Jack and his uncle were named after the World Heavyweight boxer John L. Sullivan who was the great-great uncle of Jack. Jack worked in Connecticut radio for nearly 40 years as an account executive. He started out at WPLR FM and then worked for Cox Radio at WEZN FM which is currently owned by Connoisseur Media. Music always played a big role in his life since he first saw the Beatles at Suffolk Downs in 1966. He enjoyed all types of music and loved that he had a career that had music at its core. He was preceded by his father Thomas and is survived by his mother Dorothy F. Caulfield of Needham, MA, his brothers Martin J. Caulfield of Brooklyn, NY and Andrew T. Caulfield, sister-in-law Suzana Assahina and beloved nephew Alexander A. Caulfield, all of Needham, MA as well as loving cousins and their families across the country. The Caulfield family would like to thank all of Jack's friends and co-workers for their love and support of him and our family over the past year. Services will be private. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made in his name to the Stanley R. Tippett Hospice Home, 920 South St, Needham, MA 02492 or to Plugged In Band Program, 40 Freeman Place, Needham MA 02492

Jack and I met in Navy boot camp in Great Lakes, Illinois in January 1973 and became friends. He and I were roommates at Fort Meade, Maryland for about two years. He helped me develop a love for music and was one of those people who was a friend to all. He has had a lasting impact on my life as it was Jack who introduced me to my now wife of 38 years. I am so sorry that we lost contact through the years. You are missed by your friends,Jack.

When the song Go All the Way by the Rasberries came on the car radio tonight, I told my son about a fun night seeing the band in Boston with my friend Jack. When I told my son how much I enjoyed becoming friends with Jack at UMass, he asked me if I had kept in touch with him. I told him regrettably we lost touch over the years but he was someone I would relish reconnecting with over a beer. When Matt looked up Jack I was so sorry to learn of his passing. Super guy. Rest In Peace my friend Jack.

Was just watching the news and saw a piece on Amherst. I remembered a good Navy friend had gone there. Wondered what he was doing these days. So sad to come across his obituary. Jack and I were Arabic linguists together. The good old days. He was such a happy soul and could always make you feel good even on your worst day. I know he touched many lives and made this world a better place. You will be missed, Jack.❤

It is very sad that Jack has passed, but this is a beautiful obituary. Every single word describes Jack to a "T". Jack was simply a lovely person.

My sincerest condolences on the loss of a beloved friend. His smile was infectious as was his always upbeat and positive attitude. He made everyone around him feel happy and loved. I will miss that smile. I met him at a gym in New Haven many years ago and liked him immediately. How could I not like him? He will be missed but his warmth and kindness will live in my heart forever..
