JOHN CURRY Obituary

CURRY, John A. Former President of Northeastern University Saugus, MA (formerly of Lynn, MA) - Dr. John A. Curry, age 88, beloved husband of the late Marcia E. Curry, passed away at home, surrounded by his loving family. John was born on May 12, 1934, in Boston, MA, to the late John Anthony Curry and Margaret F. (Connors) Curry. John grew up in the city of Lynn, MA and graduated from Lynn English High School in 1951. He and Marica, his wife of over 60 years, resided in Saugus, MA, where they raised their family. John leaves behind two sons, Robert Curry and his wife Claire (LeBlanc) Curry of Waltham and Timothy Curry and his wife Susan (Moriello) Curry of Saugus; and one daughter, Susan (Curry) Brown of Saugus. He is also survived by six grandchildren, James Brown, Jessica Jaklitsch, Nicole Kroll, Melissa Deming, Christopher Curry, Courtney Curry, and spouses. He is survived by his younger brother, Martin Curry; as well as seven great-grandchildren, whom he cherished dearly. John was a graduate of the class of 1956 at Northeastern University, Boston, Massachusetts. In 1960, he received his master's in education from Northeastern and in 1980, he received his doctorate in Education from Boston University. He had an accomplished career in education before becoming the president of Northeastern University, from 1989 to 1996. Dr. John A. Curry, was the first president who was also a Northeastern alumnus. As president, he made significant improvements to the university, including renovating athletic facilities, expanding the women's athletics program, and embracing technology, by implementing computer and internet connectivity for the first time, across campus. After his retirement, John's service was recognized through the dedication of the "John and Marcia Curry Student Center". Since his retirement, Curry has published nine books, including his first novel titled "Loyalty" and his most recent novel "Running in Lane One." John enjoyed spending summers on the Cape with Marcia, swimming, running or walking his favorite spots. He loved playing basketball with his kids, or having a competitive, nightly hour of Jeopardy with the family. He was an avid collector of movies and books, and a loyal fan of the Boston Red Sox, and Celtics. You could often catch John and Marcia enjoying breakfast at the Hammersmith Restaurant, or a good slice of Monty's Pizza, as well as their weekly dinner at Kowloon Restaurant. As amazing as the long list of "Jack" Curry's accomplishments may be, no list can begin to describe what he meant to his family and friends on a personal level. Jack's sharp wit and intellect were matched only by his kindness and humility. Jack is also survived by his cherished cousins from Quincy, his lifelong friends that he remained close with, and the many memorable colleagues whom he revered. The family would like to thank, on behalf of Jack, the numerous caregivers who stood by him through the ups and downs he endured fighting Parkinson's disease. They graciously cared for him in his home, with kindness and compassion. Finally, Jack's children and grandchildren, led by his daughter, Susan Brown; his primary caregiver, who never wavered from his side, while remaining a vigilant support system. Jack's legacy will continue to inspire those who knew him. In lieu of flowers, contributions in John's memory may be made to: Northeastern University, President John A. Curry Scholarship Fund, 716 Columbus Avenue, 402CP, Boston, MA 02120. Please note the President John A. Curry Scholarship Fund on the contribution. As a faculty member at Northeastern for forty years, it is my opinion that Jack Curry was the kindness and most cordial President along with Ken Ryder. I have a photo of the two of them displayed in my home. My prayers to all the Curry family. Blessings on Holy Thursday, a Holy Week. And Easter.

I knew Jack since I was in grade school and he was a co-op student in my Dad's office working for Dr. White, who was then the Vice President. Through my days as a student at NU, many times at the end of the working day I'd meet Jack as we both waited in Dad's office. I enjoyed many discussions about the Celtics with him. He could show great sense of humor when the situation didn't require him to behave more seriously. The photo here shows his impish smile and those great blue eyes with which our sports talk was enlivened.
Now Jack has joined his beloved Marcia and may they rest together in peace as they very much deserve. I send sincere sympathy to the entire Curry family.

I used to get into the Northeastern parking lot about 7:00a.m. each day to beat the Southeast Expressway traffic. Most times Jack's car was already there or he had also just arrived, and I enjoyed our walks to our offices together. I learned more about University issues on those walks than in most meetings I attended. He had a wealth of knowledge, and try as many might to emulate him, we just couldn't. He was a terrific leader and more importantly, a great colleague and friend. Rest in peace, Jack. You certainly deserve it.

I am saddened to learn of Dr. John Curry´s passing. I first met him as I was appointed to the NU faculty in 1959. He had been a recent NU graduate and employed in Admissions. I was a witness to his meteoric rise to the Presidency. He was most helpful to me as I became Founding Chairman of the Department of Communication Sciences and Disorders. Jack´s friendliness , sincerity, kindness , and enthusiasm all blended well with his
Intellect and leadership style.
Thanks Jack : Requiescat in pace.

Twenty plus years ago, my wife and I would take the kids to the Kernwood once a week for dinner. Great food and they would put up with the kids when they got a little rambunctious. Most weeks, another couple would be there, play with our kids, and join us in conversation. John and Marcia. As soon as I learned his name, as a fellow Lynn guy I knew he was a Lynn Legend. Bartender Ray Donnelly was my best friend from High School (St. Mary's) and he would join in too. We talked about sports, family, Lynn etc and not once did John ever pull out the "Do you know who I am?" Card. Just such a nice, kind gentleman!
Even his obit understates his accomplishments. When he took over Northeastern, it was still a good local commuter school. When he left, it was a first rate international university.
RIP

A true visionary, who had to make some tough decisions related to the course that Northeastern Univerisity was going to follow in the late 80's and early 90's. Northeastern University has since bloomed into a world reknown institution built, in part, on the co-op plan that Jack knew so well.

As a graduate of Northeastern University (M.S. 1982) and a resident of Saugus, I saw Dr. Curry quite often "running" about the town. He was the epitome of a gentleman and a scholar. May he rest in peace.
