John Martuccelli Obituary

MARTUCCELLI, John R. Of Hudson, Massachusetts, an Aeronautical Engineer with MIT, a Naval Aviator and retired Teacher, died on Tuesday, September 1, 2009. He was the loving husband of Vilma A. (Nicolo) Martuccelli. He was the son of the late Pietro and Carmina (De Lisa) Martuccelli. He was born in Lawrence, Massachusetts. He also lived in Concord, Mass for 18 years where he and his wife raised their four children. He also resided in Woburn, Mass and Johnston, Rhode Island. Mr. Martuccelli was a Naval Aviator starting in 1945, trained in fighter and bomber type aircraft, and flew fighter air craft during his service in the Air Atlantic Fleet. Mr. Martuccelli was discharged in 1950 with the rank of Lt. j/g. He graduated from MIT, class of 1954 with highest honors. He received his B.S. In 1952 and his M.S. In 1953 from MIT. John continued working at MIT for 35 years starting as a Research Lab Engineer then as a Senior Project Engineer. He reached the title of Executive Officer of the Aeroelastic and Structures Research Laboratory where he published more than a dozen research articles in the field of aerodynamics. Later he was an Administrative Officer for the Department of Aeronautics and Astronautics at MIT, serving from 1967 to 1977. He later became Director of the Engineering Internship Program for the School of Engineering where he served until his retirement in 1988. Mr. Martuccelli was an accomplished teacher. He taught mathematics in the evening division of Suffolk University for 28 years, retiring in 1987 as Master Lecturer. He loved sailing, enjoyed gardening and playing the guitar. He was a very devoted Husband, Father, and Grandfather. He was also a member of the following honorary societies, Tau Beta Pi, Gamma Alpha Rho, Sigma XI, AIPA, Sigma Gamma Tau and Sigma Zeta. He leaves his wife of 56 years and their four children, Nina Botticelli of Wilton, CT, Cristina Martuccelli of North Smithfield, RI, Lisa Ruzzo of Coventry, RI and Peter Martuccelli of Sudbury, MA. He also leaves six grandchildren. The funeral will be held on Saturday, September 5th at 9:00 a.m. from the Duckett J.S. Waterman & Sons Home of Memorial Tribute, 656 Boston Post Road, Rt. 20, SUDBURY, MA. Funeral Mass at Our Lady of Fatima Church, 160 Concord Road, Sudbury at 10:00 o'clock.
