JOHN MCKENZIE Obituary

McKENZIE, John "Pie" Why did the cowboy adopt a wiener dog? He wanted to get a long little doggie. To some people, that's just a dreadfully corny joke, but it's just the kind of thing that Johnny 'Pie' McKenzie would have said and laughed about for more than a few minutes. The McKenzie family acknowledges with great sorrow that John died on Saturday, June 9, 2018. To most people, John was the irrepressible Bruins right winger who brought maximum energy, drive, and skill to every game and who never backed down from a fight (and may have instigated a few himself). But to those who had the pleasure of knowing him off the ice, he was kind and generous, he was stubborn, he was friendly and outgoing, he had a lightning fast wit, and was full of fun. He loved to tell you that you had something on your shirt and poke you in the nose when you looked down to see it. Most of all he fiercely loved his family and friends. At his roots, John was a Canadian cowboy who gave his all to every endeavor he undertook. Born on Dec 12, 1937, he spent his 80 years bringing warmth and laughter to his world, especially to his life partner Beth, daughters Bette, Jackie, Lori, Amy and Megan; sons-in-law Tim and Jamey; and grandkids David, Caitlyn, Kerry, Max, Pat, McKenzie, Sean, Casey, Samantha, Lilly, Abby, and John. John, Dad, Grandpa Pie; the memories we have of you and made with you will warm our hearts and make us laugh forever. As we say farewell, we ask that those who knew or admired our beloved 'Pie' to honor his life and legacy by living a little bit more like him. A life full of heart, determination, and forgiveness. One where you never let your age prevent you from having fun and acting like a kid. In his own words, "If they ask what I died from, tell 'em I had a bone in my leg". Services are private

I grew up in Lexington and Cambridge Ma. During the Pie McKenzie era. His most important goal was in Game 4. of the 1970 semi final round game vs. The Blackhawks. Pie scored with under 2 minutes to play, to give the Bruins a 5-4 victory. And a 4-0 series sweep.

It would be a busy day in the pro shop. Phone ringing people hovering around the counter checking one thing or another. After most everyone was gone you'd look up and see Johnnie Pie sitting inconspicuously in a chair- never saying a word. My dad Spike would say Hey Johnnie Pie.
And McKenzie would say Not to busy today ey' Spike! And then he'd slap his knee and just start laughing. It ALWAYS brought a smile to us. Every time you'd see Pie - you knew your day was going to be a little bit brighter. God Bless you Johnnie. Say hi to Spike & Ezzie for me.

I knew Johnny from my days at the Branding Iron in Boston and delivered a special meal to him when he was in the Mass General back in 70-71, compliments of Bobby Orr. The entire team was made up of individuals yet they molded together as one unit, that was their success. I'll miss you Johnny, say Hi to Ace. Scotty

I am so sorry to hear of the passing of my wonderful godfather from Nanton, Alberta, Canada. My childhood memories spent with John and his family during the summers in Nanton, between hockey seasons, are treasured and special. My Dad Warren Cooper Jr. was a childhood friend of John's. Their friendship continued into adulthood when both had young families and beyond. The McKenzies would visit our ranch west of Nanton and fun was had by all!!
My visits to Boston and time spent with John were always great and although time had passed and distance was between us I always felt a great connection to John.
To John's family and friends in Boston wishing all of you the best!

Thanks for the memories of watching the "B's" as a girl with my Dad. Can still hear him yelling "at a boy PIE" One of my favorite memories of him. I am sure he will meet up him in heaven. Boston was a better because of Pie. My deepest condolences to his loved ones.

I worked with Pie at the Gallery Group in Norwood in the mid 90s. I used to sell cars with him. My fondest memory of him was one day I complemented him on his tie. He then processed to take it off and give it to me. He went to his office and grabbed another one. I put it on that day and wore it. I still have that tie. It is one of my favorite ties. My deepest sympathy to his family. My prayers are with you.

Wow! I have been trying to write this for twenty minutes now and as sad as this is I have been laughing my self silly thinking of him. I plagiarize him on a daily basis and get a laugh every time my favorite was whenever someone tried to one up him he would always say "next time were going to have you go first" He and I went to one of those uppity restaurants when it first opened and he called the waiter over and asked him what he had ordered because we had waited so long he'd forgotten. When they eventually put in front of him a tiny piece of meat and a single piece of Asparagus he again summoned the waiter and asked if there was a McDonalds near by because he was going to be awfully hungry when he was finished eating and then finally when the waiter made the mistake of asking him how he found his steak he replied "I rolled over a pea and there it was"
That was The Johnnie "Pie" McKenzie I knew and loved

My mom grew up with John in Nanton, AB. I got to meet him a few times including during an autograph signing session in Edmonton around 1974. Maybe he saw Mom standing in line with me waiting but when I walked up to get his autograph he just smiled and said, 'Hello, John, how are you doing today?' Pretty heady stuff for 10-year old kid meeting a big-time NHL player. John is the reason I still cheer for the Bruins today. My thoughts go out to his family.

My memories of Pie, he came to the hair school I teach in the same year I lost my sister suddenly, she was one of his life long fans. To this day I say he came to the school that same month as her death to bring joy to me for my memories of all the things she collected of him and how much she loved him as a player. After that he came every month for his haircut and I would say to the student after he left, do you know who he is and of course because of their age they would say no WHO? I would say Pie McKenzie of the Boston Bruins. I would tell them to go home and ask their father or grandfather who PIE McKenzie was and that you had the great privilege of cutting a LEGENDS hair. We still have his picture up at the school near our reception desk where it will remain forever. To Pie's family my deepest condolences to you all. He always made me laugh when I saw him. He will be in my memories for eternity. We miss him at Hair's How.
