JOHN METAXAS Obituary

METAXAS, John Arthur Age 75, of Swansea, passed away on October 21, 2023, at home. He was the husband of Deborah (Fischbach) Metaxas. Born in Pensacola, Florida, he was the son of the late Reverend Doctor Arthur J. Metaxas and the late Presvytera Georgia Metaxas. In addition to his wife, he is survived by his children, Adam Metaxas of Attleboro, MA, Christopher and Christine Gorelczenko of Sweden, Emily and Jamie Danis of Franklin, MA and Molly and Hope Galofaro of South Attleboro, MA; grandchildren, Cody Gorelczenko, Tyler Gorelczenko, KC Gorelczenko, Owen Gorelczenko, Wyatt Gorelczenko, Aidan Danis and Camden Danis; and nieces and nephews, Christina and Cosma Karalolos, Alexander and Kat Ypsilantis, Stephanie and Jared Quill and Gina and Brandon Robertson. He was the brother of Nick and Donna Metaxas, Kathy and Nick Ypsilantis and the late Maria and George Koufos. In childhood, John was a member of his father's Greek Orthodox Church and served as an altar server, choir member and was involved in the Goya Youth Association. He received his bachelor's degree from Hellenic College and his master's degree from Boston State College. He was employed by Attleboro Schools for 30 years before retiring. John was fondly known as "John A." by numerous people over the years. He was blessed with the incredible gift of gab, making friends wherever he was. John referred to several men in his life as "Mr.", including his son Mr. Adam. He was a man of many stories; a history buff and someone who thoroughly enjoyed talking politics with anyone that would listen. Over the course of John's life, he was a lobster fisherman, a middle and elementary school teacher for a total of 37 years in Marblehead and Attleboro, ran the flag store in Bristol and held a variety of other side jobs. He was a very active guy who loved long walks with his dogs, being at the lake or ocean and experiencing the outdoors. John was always very involved in the community, volunteering his time for the Boy Scouts, Civil Air Patrol and Rotary. He played in the Attleboro men's basketball fossil league and was a beloved fan of the Boston Celtics. John loved his sweets and was notorious for hiding his Little Debbie snacks high in the cabinets so no one else would find them. John was a great man whose impact will be forever felt by his family, friends, former students and coworkers. His Funeral Services will take place Friday, October 27, 9 AM, at the George C. Lima Funeral Home, 367 High Street, BRISTOL, RI, followed by a Mass of Christian Burial at 10 AM, at St. Mary's Church, 330 Wood Street. Burial will follow in North Burial Ground. Calling Hours are Thursday, 4 to 8 PM. Memorial donations may be made to, Association for Frontotemporal Degeneration, [email protected] or AFTD, 2700 Horizon Drive, Suite 120, King of Prussia, PA 19406. www.limafh.com

I have such fond memories of my time working with John. He was kind and compassionate. He loved to connect with others and make people laugh. The students he taught were fortunate to have such a terrific role model. I am thinking of you all.

Sorry to hear. MR Metaxas was one of the best teachers I had throughout my schooling years. Great influence in my early days.
