Born in Braintree, Massachusetts, raised in Westbury, New York, and a 50-year-plus resident of Cambridge, John wore many hats: father, grandfather; altar boy; Fairfield University alum; Troner; Peace Corp volunteer in the Philippines; high school English teacher; conscientious Vietnam War objector; radiation oncology therapist; acronym afficionado; serial sign maker; Little League baseball coach; Duke Snider, Bill Lee, John Wooden, Kareem Abdul-Jabbar, Bill Walton, Keith Richards and John Lennon superfan; March Madness board maker; Roosevelt Family history hobbyist; Acorn Cup Commissioner; and Life of Every Party - to name just a few.

John was preceded by his parents, Lillian Hartford Monks and John Patrick Monks, Sr. He leaves his son, Christopher Monks; grandsons, Samuel Monks and Noah Monks; and daughter-in-law, Anne R. Clark, all of Arlington, Massachusetts; siblings, Sheila Campbell (William Campbell) of Kirkwood, Missouri, Richard Monks (Enid Eckstein) of Jamaica Plain, Massachusetts, Thomas Monks (Denise Monks) of West Roxbury, Massachusetts and Maureen Monks (Karen Price) of Cambridge, Massachusetts; former wife, Bonnie Brugger of Gloucester, Massachusetts; loving nephews, nieces and cousins; and many friends and colleagues from his 30-plus years working at various Boston hospitals.
