Joe and I lived close enough that we could walk to each other's house in Providence. Although we attended different high schools, the summer of our junior year, together with a dozen other teens, we went to AJSS, a "work camp" in Ripley, Tennessee. There we experienced segregation and de-segregation first hand. We were stirred by the music we heard. Joe and I bonded through music. Joe was a trusted friend and a musical force.
May his memory be a blessing.

I´ll never forget hearing you rock and soul that authentic Ray Charles on your mom´s piano for the first time. We were 16. You taught me the words "They call me Goodtime Charlie, playboy with a whole lotta soul", which I promptly tried to impress my older sister with. Clare responded back, "wait a minute.. I already heard of Joe, he´s gotta be my bestest-camp-mate´s brother" (Camp Pembroke). Joe, you were already a legend then. I will never forget. Maybe we can gig some day at the HiHat in the sky.
