JOSEPH VACCARO Obituary

VACCARO, Joseph P. Influential educator, Professor Emeritus of Marketing at Suffolk University, 89 Joseph "Joe" Pascal Vaccaro, age 89, longtime resident of Auburndale and currently of Green Harbor, passed away on August 13, 2024, after a period of declining health. He was the loving father of Paul and wife, Susan, Anne Sweeney and late husband, William, Theresa Roades and husband, Bradley and Rose Doherty and husband, William. Devoted grandfather of Margarite and Samantha Vaccaro, Jenna and Cole Sweeney, Justine, Jake and Ella Roades and William, Erin and Evan Doherty. He is also survived by his sister, Phyllis Jordan; brothers-in-law, Lewis Jordan and Charles Murphy; and sisters-in-law, Kathy Cedrone Vaccaro and Janice Vaccaro. He was predeceased by his wife of 58 years, Patricia (Murphy); and brothers, John and James. He was the uncle to many nieces and nephews and Godchildren. Joe received his bachelor's degree from the School of Management at Boston College in 1957 and would later earn both his MBA and Juris Doctor degrees from Suffolk University. After college, he served in the United States Army for two years before establishing himself as a restaurant entrepreneur/executive, as the owner of Vaccaro's Iron Rail in Waltham. In 1966, he transitioned into academia as an instructor at Burdett College. Five years later, he joined the marketing faculty at Suffolk, where he would go on to teach for three decades, authoring six textbooks and over 50 articles for scholarly publications that spanned the marketing, management and advertising disciplines. Educating thousands of students, he was widely popular for his classroom approach that combined old school values with modern day wisdom. Under his leadership, the school's Advertising Club competed in the College World Series of Advertising, earning awards in 22 of 25 years of regional campaign competitions, while advancing to the national finals three times. His career was further highlighted by being named a past recipient of the American Marketing Association's prestigious Hugh G. Wales Award, as national Faculty Advisor of the Year and inclusion into selection of such biographical editions as Outstanding Young Men in America, Who's Who in American Education, Who's Who in Advertising, Community Leaders of America, Notable Americans and Outstanding Scholars of the 20th Century. Upon his retirement in 2001, he was bestowed the title of Professor Emeritus of Marketing at Suffolk. Along with his wife, together, they formed the dynamic duo of "Sip and Chat with Joe and Pat," where they were long known for their summers of entertaining at their Green Harbor home. A lifetime Red Sox fan and avid follower of all the Boston sports teams, he was also devoted to his Catholic faith, was well-versed on politics and current events, had a love for ice cream and a fondness for sitting at the beach amongst his close circle of friends and as of his passing, was one of the longest living daily subscribers and readers of the Boston Globe. Above all, he shared a true love for family. In being the oldest sibling of four, the father of four and grandfather of ten, he took great pride in and embraced his elder statesman's role as patriarch of the Vaccaro family in his later years. Joe will be missed. He taught me at Burdett College in Boston when I got out of the service in 1968. Sold him my family cottage in 1970 . Visited him two times over the last 6 years when we were on the Cape. Had a couple of laughs about the Veterans club he headed up. God will take care of him because he’s a good man
