JOYCE STURDY Obituary

Sturdy, Joyce Lorraine (Luckett) 81, of Cohasset, passed away on August 12, 2015 at her summer home on Nassau Point in Cutchogue, Long Island, New York. Her husband of 62 years, Robert Hancock Sturdy, Sr. cared for her throughout her heroic, decade-long struggle with Parkinson's. She was surrounded by her family at the time of her death. Joyce was born September 12, 1933 in Melrose, Massachusetts. A graduate of Colby-Sawyer College, Joyce raised a family of six children. She was active in the Church of the Redeemer in Chestnut Hill and served as Junior Warden and on the vestry of St. Stephen's Episcopal Church in Cohasset. A member of the Cohasset Garden Club and a former president of the Community Garden Club of Cohasset, she also managed an electronics company in Hingham for fifteen years. She was a strong advocate for women in business. Energetic and with a wonderful sense of humor and fun, Joyce loved children and often had a few more than her own in tow. All were welcome at her homes in Brookline, Cohasset, and Long Island. She loved to entertain among the gardens and interiors she created. Joyce spent much time boating in order to include in leisure time the family and friends to whom she was so devoted. She was a successful competitor in predicted log racing and enjoyed sailing annually to Nantucket. A lifelong enthusiast for contract bridge, she played frequently and would analyze play daily with her husband. She loved and cared for her parents, Dorothy and Francis E. Luckett, her children, and her seventeen grandchildren. Her daughter Susan Sturdy of Cohasset passed away in 2013. She is survived by her husband Robert Hancock Sturdy, Sr. and children Robert Hancock Sturdy, Jr. of Marshfield Hills, David Coles Sturdy and his wife Charlotte of Scituate, Jean Sturdy Snyder and her husband John of Topsfield, James Luckett Sturdy and his wife Gwendolyn of Williamsburg, Virginia, and Charles Hancock Sturdy and his wife Anastasia (Stacy) of Cohasset, as well as her grandchildren Katherine, Emily, Lauren, Elizabeth, Ian, Mark, Linnea, William, Thomas, Carina, Robert III, Diana, Benjamin, Samuel, Tegan, Anneliese and Alexander. A memorial service will be held at the Holy Trinity Episcopal Church in Greenport, New York.

October 14, 2015

On Oct. 14 The Muirs in Chicago just got word of Joyce's death in August. We send our deepest sympathy to Bob and all his wonderful family who were such a part of our lives at one time. Miles have separated us for some time but we have such fond memories of wonderful dinners, adventures, visiting Maine and Long Island and seeing your large family expand and grow and watching and standing in awe of Joyce and her amazing abilities to manage it all and of Bob who cooked and worked to make their home so efficient. We miss those times in the den, over a glass of wine, talking about family and friends and all the challenges of being parents. Wish we could see you all, but know we are thinking of the many great times!! Ruth, Richard, Scot, John and Sarah Muir and families.

September 19, 2015

I am saddened to learn of Joyce's passing, just today, Sept. 19th. I was a high school classmate, friend. Also played bridge with a group including Joyce, back in the late 1950's while she still lived in Brookline. My condolences to the family.

Fondly, Judith (Judy) Hawkes Grocott.
