JUNE HAZELWOOD Obituary

HAZELWOOD, June Winifred Turner Age 93, formerly of Wakefield, MA, passed away on September 12, 2019 with family by her side.

Born in Belmont, MA on June 17, 1926, to Mildred and Frank Turner, she grew up in Medford, MA.

June graduated from Medford H.S., Class of 1944. As a teenager, she was an accomplished softball and basketball player, President of the Girls Athletic Association, received high honors and belonged to the Kendall Society. In addition, in three months she helped raise seventy-five thousand dollars in student war bonds, which she presented to the Army for the purchase of a P-51 Mustang plane. The plane was named "Medford Mustang". She was inducted into the "Mustang Hall of Fame" in 2006, for her educational achievements, time and dedication.

June went on to receive a B.A. in Liberal Arts, 1948, and a Master's in Education-Guidance, 1953, from the University of Boston.

She became a teacher at Foxboro Jr. High, 1955-1956, and left for a position as a Social Studies Teacher for Wakefield, Jr. High. In 1969, she became the Assistant Department Chairperson for Social Studies until her retirement in 1985.

Prior to her retirement (1984), June married her high school sweetheart, Richard Hazelwood. They were active with the Civil Air Patrol and spent time traveling to various states and countries. They resided in Wakefield, near Lake Quannapowitt, where they left a memory of their life together, by having their names engraved on bricks and laid at Lake Quannapowitt.

Mrs. Hazelwood was preceded in death by her husband Richard. She is survived by three stepchildren; Bevyn Hazelwood, Derry (Hazelwood) Voorhees and Shawn Hazelwood and three grandchildren, Erik, Kristen and Alex Voorhees.

Eight cousins; Karen Ferrande, Gail Tsoukalas, Leonard Dunn, William Dunn, Michael Dunn, Wayne Francis, Donald Francis, and Robert Francis.

Visitation for relatives and friends will be held at The McDonald Funeral Home, 19 Yale Ave., WAKEFIELD, on Monday from 3-5 p.m. A Funeral Service will be held on Tuesday at the Wesley United Methodist Church, 100 Winthrop St., Medford, at 10:30 a.m.

Interment will take place at Lakeside Cemetery, North Ave., Wakefield.

I'm so very sorry to hear of the passing of June. It was my pleasure to have been her dental hygienist and friend for twenty years. She was the sweetest and I'm lucky to have known her. Rest in peace sweet June, I will never forget you xoxoxo

I was lucky enough to have Miss Turner for 8th grade social studies in the mid 1970s. I found her a little intimidating at first, but I really appreciated what she taught us (yes, like writing a check!) and the very high standards she set for her students. She was always someone I admired -- a smart, independent, ethical woman who wanted us all to be the same. This period was a time of great activism on women's issues, and Miss Turner was not overtly political, but her example made us girls believe we could do anything.
I also feel very lucky that I happened to live near to Miss Turner's house because I got to know her outside of the student-teacher relationship. In high school and beyond, I would see her often in her yard. I even met her husband and heard their wonderful story of re-finding each other after so many years. I am so glad that she had such a happy, full, and long life.
My heart goes out to her family now. I am sure that she will be greatly missed and she was enormously loved. Realize that she touched the lives of many, many students, and even if we didn't realize it at the time, we benefited greatly from her teaching and from her care. RIP, Miss Turner (She will always be Miss Turner to us, & I mean that with no disrespect. I am so happy she became Mrs. Hazelwood, but to her students, she was Miss Turner -- although some of us did call her June behind her back! :) )
With my warmest condolences....

I had "Miss Turner" for 8th grade social studies. She was a great teacher--tough, but fair, demanding excellence--and a kind person. I recognized her photo immediately (though it's been 45 years!) but I was confused by the name. Then I read that she had married "later in life." I remember her taking the time to teach us some practical things (like how to write a check) that weren't normal "social studies" lessons, because she thought they were important life skills that everyone should know, but were not being taught. She seems to have lived a long and happy life. Rest in peace. Sincerely, Donna Marcotte, WHS class of 1978

I served as Richard and June's financial adviser for many years. Great couple. We shared many conversations at their kitchen table. They loved the wildlife in their backyard. June loved the turkey tips at the 99. We broke bread often. I will miss her kind spirit and gentle ways

June played a great role in my life after I graduated from college. After several interviews I became a member of her department in 1975. She was fair, tough but demanded her department do the best for the students. If any of her colleagues had a crisis June was there for them. June will always be in my thoughts and prayers
