KERRY DUGAN Obituary

DUGAN, Kerry Passed peacefully on Tuesday morning, pain-free and surrounded by family. An arduous struggle with Lewy Body Dementia slowly stole one of the most beautifully gifted minds one might have the pleasure to encounter. As a veteran, father, grandfather, husband, brother, and professor, he touched thousands of lives with his unique flavor of philosophy, religion, ethics, the paranormal, and terrible jokes. Kerry was an Air Force veteran, serving at Sculthorpe Air Force Base in England before returning to the U.S. in 1964 to attend Northeastern University.  While at Northeastern he pursued his passion in theatre, serving as president for the Silver Masque for several years, working as a crew member, student director, and excelling as a stage manager. Kerry's first co-op job as a computer programmer at John Hancock Life Insurance Company led him down a career path in IT, where he directed computer centers at such companies as the United Way, Camp Dresser & McKee, and Tufts University. Ultimately however, his love for philosophy and teaching beckoned too strongly to ignore. Building on his undergraduate study of philosophy, Kerry pursued advanced degrees in education and philosophy during which time he began teaching under the tutelage of a master in the Socratic method of teaching philosophy.  His 25-year career as a charismatic faculty member in the philosophy department at Northeastern University touched the lives of countless students, so many of whom felt their lives had been forever changed by him.  He lives on in the lives of others. Professor Dugan was there for me at a very confusing time in my life. I took his existentialism course, and we read Being and Time by Heidegger. It's a complicated book, but he found a way for us to question things and learn as a group.

To be honest, he did more to help me understand the meaning of this life we have than anyone else. I wish I had kept up with him more over the years, but I'm very glad I had that semester with him.

I remember a day when I had a lot of questions about what we were reading, and the next day he gave me a printed story that related perfectly. Very rare to find a mentor like that.

I'm certain he had this type of impact on 100s of students.

I met Kerry when we were philosophy graduate students at Tulane University in New Orleans.

He lived next door to me and my family, and very soon he was a frequent guest in our home, where we have many fine conversations.

Kerry's mind was interested in just about everything, and his heart was open to everyone.

Kerry was one of the few graduate students I knew who managed to find a teaching position, allowing him to work with students whom he respected and cared about. I am not surprised to read memories from students who said he had a significant and lasting impact on their lives.

My deepest sympathy goes out to Ruth and his children. Kerry was a fine person from whose friendship my family benefitted in so many lovely ways.

Rest in peace, my friend.

Kerry actually changed my life. The way he taught, and thought Will resonate with me forever. I´m now a professional poker player and Golf professional, purely because of how he taught me to "question everything". It made me the person I am today. I will always remember him walking across campus with his coffee, coming in to class and going "any questions?" And the class lit up from there. Sometimes I needed advice on things and his office door would be cracked open with his desk light on, and I could walk in there and talk about anything. He is one of my heroes, I will miss you forever Kerry

A phenomenal teacher. One of his great skills was listening to students in a way they had never experienced before. He was able to hear a deeper meaning in my words than I knew was there. I developed a completely new thought process under his tutelage that brought spirituality to my life in a way no religion ever had. I am forever grateful to have encountered professor Dugan. My deepest condolences to the family.

Aside from my parents, no single human on earth has had as much influence on me than Kerry. He literally changed my life in the most fundamental way possible, and gave me the gift of limitless thought and exploration of life. I truly consider him to be one of the great masters, little did the world know. But, those of us whose lives were changed by him will never forget. RIP, Dugan.

Dear Ruth,
I am so sorry to hear of your loss. I have good memories of working with Kerry in University College, of his love of teaching, his easygoing nature, and yes, his terrible jokes. My heart goes out to you and your children.

Rest in peace to Professor Dugan. I had him for existentialism/Heidegger while an undergraduate at Northeastern in 2011. He was such a different stock of philosophy teacher in all the best ways. I remember he had a bunch of us over to his house one day. He also encouraged my interests in religion even though I was in a primarily analytic philosophy department at NEU. Thank you for those transformational 4 months, Kerry. You've changed many lives thanks to you being you.

On a whim, I took Professor Dugan's Business Ethics course at Northeastern during my freshman year in 2000-01. Our class discussions and Dugan's introduction of philosophical texts honestly changed how I approached education and life in many ways. To this day, I still think about questions that he posed and insights that he scribbled on my term paper. To his family, I send my deepest condolences. Mr. Dugan was a great man.
