McCULLY, Kilmer Kilmer Serjus McCully, 1933-2025 Dr. Kilmer Serjus McCully of Winchester, MA, pathologist, researcher, beloved husband, father, grandfather, great-grandfather and friend, passed away February 21, 2025, at his home of 60 years in Winchester, MA, surrounded by family. He was 91. He was preceded in death by his wife, Annina Elena, who passed away in 2023. He is survived by his two children, Martha of East Hampton, NY and Michael and wife, Ellie of Naples, FL; his grandsons, Cameron and wife, Sophia of Boston and Tyler and wife, Emily of New York; two great-grandchildren; his sister, Marilyn Raeburn of London, England and husband, Michael; and his nephew. Kilmer was a true pioneer. Born in Daykin, NE in 1933, his family had two properties granted under the 1862 Homestead Act in Recluse, WY and in Herreid, SD, where he spent summers. Kilmer received his A.B. degree, magna cum laude, from Harvard College in 1955, Phi Beta Kappa and his M.D. degree, cum laude, from Harvard Medical School in 1959, Alpha Omega Alpha. He was a member of the Harvard Musical Association for many years and President from 1994-97. During college, he met his "darling Nina," and they married in 1955 at the Appleton Chapel in Harvard Yard. Kilmer and Nina had a loving marriage for 68 years. Kilmer began his medical career at Mass General and Harvard Medical School. He served two years at NIH in the United States Public Health Service. Later, he was Associate Professor Pathology at Brown University and Pathology Chief at the VA Medical Center in Providence. Kilmer returned to Boston in 2001, as Chief of Pathology and Director of all VA Medical Centers in New England and Associate Clinical Professor Pathology at Harvard Medical School. Kilmer McCully, MD is internationally recognized as "The Father of Homocysteine," for the homocysteine theory of arteriosclerosis. Kilmer published 85 research articles in peer-reviewed medical journals and wrote three books, one of which co-authored with his daughter. Throughout his 65-year career, Kilmer won numerous awards, honors, appointments and committee assignments and holds ten U.S. patents related to his homocysteine theory. Burial Services were private.
