Louise BRUYN Obituary

BRUYN, Louise Alice Muenzer Passed away peacefully on Sunday, December 1, at the age of 94. Born in Chicago, Illinois, in 1930, to Hans Muenzer, concert violinist and Esther Payne concert pianist. She and her two older brothers, both violinists, grew up surrounded by classical musical. Though she chose to not enter the world of classical music professionally, she became an educator and a modern dancer. She attended the University of Illinois, where she met her husband, Severyn T. Bruyn. After marrying and graduating with a BA in Education and Dance, they moved to Jacksonville, Illinois, where she taught elementary school and he taught Sociology at Illinois College.

In 1966, her husband was offered a tenured position at Boston College. They, along with their children, moved to the east coast to start a new life in Newton, MA. She and her husband became members of the Cambridge Friends Meeting and over the next 55 years, her life changed. In those first years, she taught dance at The Elma Lewis Fine Arts Center in Roxbury, the Newton School for Dance and woodworking classes at The Fayerweather Street School in Cambridge, while becoming a social activist for peace and justice. Based on the Quaker faith in non-violence, she and her husband believed in the power of making change through peaceful actions.

Her call to action became clear when she made the decision to walk from Newton to Washington, D.C., to protest the Vietnam war after reading an article about how Americans had become anesthetized to the atrocities of the war. When she realized she too had become numb, she felt she had to do something. She left Newton in February of 1971 and walked in silent protest for 45 days to speak to the President and to Congress. She was joined by others periodically and kept a daily diary of her experience. 40 years later, she wrote a book entitled "She Walked for All of Us."

In 1975, she was invited to join a group of artists and musicians to organize the first "First Night" in Boston, a New Year's Eve celebration now held across the country.

Starting in the late 1970's, Louise became increasingly active in anti-nuclear and peace organizations. She was one of the founders of Mobilization for Survival, an organization of affiliated grassroots peace and social justice groups working to abolish nuclear weapons, reverse the arms race and meet human needs. In 1982, she was hired by the American Friends Service Committee to organize the Boston contingent to the June 12 Rally for Nuclear Disarmament in New York City. It turned out to be the largest anti-nuclear protest in American history, attracting more than 1 million people.

In 1990, she founded the Green Decade, now known as Green Newton, that became a model for addressing issues of climate change for other cities across the country. Green Newton remains an active resource for Newton residents and continues to have an impact on the city's approach to climate change.

Lastly, she loved nature and was also an artist who painted and sculptured beautifully. It was her creative energy and commitment to a better world that drove her throughout her life. She was a loving mother who cared deeply for her children. She is survived by her two daughters, son and her grandchildren. She was predeceased by her husband, Severyn Bruyn. She will be deeply missed. Donations in her memory can be made to Green Newton at www.greennewton.org A

Celebration of her Life will be held at the Cambridge Friends Meeting sometime in the Spring 2025.

Louise was a lovely person, and an inspiration to so many of us. My first memories of her date back to 1981, when she took over the facilitation of an AFSC task force to organize events for a delegation of hibakusha visiting Boston. As her obituary shows, this was just one of many of Louise's undertakings in the service of peace, justice and community. And what a warm, kind, thoughtful person she was! I feel very blessed to have known her.

When I joined Friends Meeting at Cambridge, I decided to follow Sev and Louise around as much as I could so I could learn more about being a Quaker. It was my tremendous good fortune that Louise and Sev restarted the Newton Worship Group. Meeting once a month over the span of about 10 years, I finally became able to realize that Louise and the others actually thought gentle things about me. This was profoundly helpful since it presented a clear contrast whenever I would think in harsh ways about myself. With that shift, my life got better for a time. I am eternally grateful for Louise's generosity and kindness. She often had our group to their house and I know that takes some doing. Louise's starting Green Newton remains also as a tremendous gift. She showed all of us what love, honesty and hard work can do. She taught by example. Thank you for sharing this great soul with Quakers, Newton Friends and Newton citizens concerned about climate issues. Much love and gratitude, for as long as I am able, for Louise.

I recall the excitement of Louise helping me choreograph a barefoot dance piece to music "Oh sinner man, where you gonna run to?" I forget the show it was to be in, but I loved working with Louise. I had met her at FMC (Friends Meeting at Cambridge).

What an important elder Louise was for those of us at Friends Meeting at Cambridge. She had a presence that radiated love and good humor, an activist in love with life. The love between her and Sev, such distinct personalities, was also inspiring. Thank you, Louise, for being part of our community.

My dear Aunt Louise was a treasure here on earth. I always felt loved in her presence and regret only that there were too many miles between us. She was a fierce advocate for justice and peace but without judgment of others' views. She was a good, loving aunt, and I will always remember her with so much love. Aunt Louise was a blessing to everyone who knew her and she will be missed very much.

Mother will be dearly missed. But I know she will visit me soon. She was uncompromised in her principals and such an inspiration for so many. One of a kind. Fierce. Creative. Lover of the Arts. Dancer. Painter. Author. And a wonderful teacher to her daughters! Her love grew more and more over the years... and we are so lucky to have her as our mum.

Still trying to digest this sad news about my very dear friend, Louise. I was so lucky to share so much work and friendship with Louise over the last 50 years. I can still see her planting rice in a paddy field during our trip to Vietnam. And then there was that 8 train trip to Nong Khai, on our way to Laos, laughing and drinking those giant bottles of Singha beer. I will miss Louise terribly

Dearest Louise was an extraordinary wonderful person with a huge warm heart, twinkly eyes, great laugh and sense of humor.
I loved that she was dedicated to working diligently for world peace, and, with her many accomplishments, she left this world a much better place that she found it. She was a great sister-in-law to me, and I loved the times that we could spend together. She will be greatly missed by all who knew and loved her.

Louise was my best friend. I admired her sense of beauty and her passion for peace and social justice. Her actions improved our lives and she leaves her mark on this world. I'm in her book and she is in mine, but more importantly, she'll stay in my heart forever. Valerie Kreutzer
