Margaret STORROW Obituary

STORROW, Margaret Randolph Artist and Daughter of James J. Storrow Jr.

January 4, 1955 - April 16, 2025

Margaret Randolph Storrow was born on January 4, 1955 in Brookline, Massachusetts. She was the daughter of James J. Storrow, Jr., the inventor of microfilm and the publisher of The Nation magazine and Patricia Blake Storrow, a Francophile and a talented actress. Both parents were avid thespians. Margaret's summer youth was spent on beaches, climbing rocks and bike riding in Marblehead and Nantucket, while the school year was in NYC. Gramma and Grampa Storrow

treasured her visits to Marblehead with overnights at The Kedge and sails on The Mercury.

She loved the ocean and for college came back to Boston, attending Boston University. After college she worked for several years at the Brookline Library and spent a lot of time at the Coolidge Corner Theatre and bookstore. Her house was full of stacks of books, from Dickens to Balzac to Iris Murdoch. In the early 2000s, Margaret moved from city life in Boston to Martha's Vineyard and it was during her years there that her creative talents fully blossomed.

She was a gifted multi-media artist, making intensely colored geometric drawings in pen and vivid abstract pieces in yarn. She kept an impressive array of sea glass and wampum, treasures she had found on the beach or in the winding lanes around her Vineyard house. Like Leonardo da Vinci, she kept a diary in "mirror writing" and as time went on wrote almost exclusively backwards. An excellent interview was published in a profile by Valerie Sonnenthal in the Martha's Vineyard Times in 2017 ( https://www.mvtimes.com/2017/10/24/art-of-the-outdoors/).

Margaret was possessed of a wry wit which often surprised and delighted those who knew her to be shy around people. She loved cats, the sea and the long walks that inspired her creativity. Her extraordinary visual and aural sensitivity enabled her to see beauty in small and subtle things, and this is evident everywhere in her work. Margaret was predeceased by her parents; and by her brother, James Storrow of whom she was so proud for facilitating the installation of the Paul Revere bell at the Old South Church in 2012.

She is survived by her eldest brother Gerald Blake Storrow, a poet, of Framingham, Massachusetts, by her brother, Peter Storrow and his wife, Debbie; and nieces, Emily and Verity Storrow, and a grand-niece Ava, of Stornoway, on the Isle of Lewis, Scotland. We will miss her wonderful smile, soft chuckle and engaging repartee.
