Dear John and family,

Marle and I were deeply saddened to hear about the loss over such a short time of your father and your mother.
I cannot begin to imagine what all of you have been going through.
Although I only met her a few times, your mother exuded a genuine warmth and generosity of spirit that I will never forget. I will always have very fond memories of those encounters, especially visiting the family home in Carruth Street.

I'm very sorry that I was not able to be with you today for your mother's funeral. Please accept my condolences and deepest sympathy.

Dear John, Julie, Joey, Franny and Theresa,

Having met your mom through my friendship with John, I alternately addressed her as “Mrs. Hannigan” and as “Marianna” as she was to me both a mentor/mother figure and later, an Oprah style “girlfriend”. She was a source of recipes and etiquette advice, as well as a confidante who always loved a good chat.

She was the perfect friend who both laughed and cried with me, always made time to listen, remembered the smallest detail, gave me my first cookbook, drove 20 miles with an extra set of car keys when I locked myself out, helped me when help was needed most, and never forgot to send a card to me on my birthday – always signed with her trademark : “Fondly, Marianna”.

She told me (and her brother Jack confirmed for me) that her childhood nickname was Mary Anne “Sunshine” Doyle for her pleasant and cheerful disposition. I keep thinking of how like the sun she was in bringing warmth and sunshine into my life and into the lives of so many others. One person can make such a huge difference in life. With the power of her smile, her genuine caring nature and her many acts of kindness, she was that one person for so many people.

As you grieve her loss, so soon after the loss of your father, I hope that you can take some comfort in knowing how beloved she was and how proud she was of you, her family.

With deepest sympathy and condolences,

Rebecca Rund

To All the Hannigan Family: I wish I didn't live in Texas or I would be with you at this sad time ! I knew Marianna from 1964 at B.C. School of Social Work. She was the sweetest, kindest and most caring person I have ever known ! She loved her children so very much and dedicated her life to making you happy as well as your father. I wrote to her every Christmas though I have been in Texas for 44 years, and I visited her many times, the last time about 4 years ago at dinner with Eileen and Landyce. I was so sorry to hear that you lost your father, too. I believe that they are now united in heaven and will be happy together for eternity. Sincerely, Annette Hrkel

As a fellow social worker in Dorchester, I had the pleasure of meeting Marianna 4 years ago. She was a tireless advocate for the people she helped, and an inspiration to me. I will miss spirit and great sense of humor. She was a true Social Worker- always showing respect and kindness for those less fortunate. My deepest sympathies to her entire family.

We could not be sadder to have lost this great friend, mother figure, dream square baker, typewriter stalwart, airport shuttler, summer teen patronage job procurer, champion of the newcomer and the needy and all-around superstar individual. She modeled values that will ever inspire us and illuminated lives in dark hours. Our love and sympathy to her brother, children, grandchildren and to the hundreds from her extended family of friends and neighbors who mourn Marianna's loss as deeply as they do. What will I NOT miss about Marianna??? I don't know if I ever knew anyone who did so much for so many. She was my first friend when I arrived at St. Mark's and we stayed friends after I moved. What a role model as a woman, friend, and follower of Christ. Well done thy good and faithful servant.
