So sad to hear about Mario's death. I really enjoyed working with Mario at Xircom, in California. I loved the passion he had for his work and his great sense of humor. His death is truly a loss. My thoughts and prayers are with you all.

I just heard about Mario’s death and am naturally saddened by the news. We were Cornell classmates who worked together on the planning committee of our highly successful 25th class reunion, where he played a meaningful role. His background in marketing, genuine love of Cornell, sense of humor and timely light touch added significantly to our weekly fundraising/event prep calls. I always enjoyed his company and creative insights during our graduate school years, and marvel at the way he carried himself with such grace in the midst of his battle with cancer.
My belated condolences to his family and my prayers for the well-deserved repose of his soul.

I was so sorry to hear about your tragic loss. Mario worked with us at Canwest in Toronto. He was a great guy with such a strong faith and will to live. (I had cancer almost eight years ago so his courage made a deep impression on me.) I remember his inviting us to watch the election of the new pope on the TV in his office even though he barely knew us at the time.

Sweet dreams to such a unique and bright soul with a fantastic zest for life and wonderful laugh that seemed to explode from way down deep. So many will weep. I hope you are frolicking through the drop dead gorgeous Italian country side with your roly poly Italian aunts laughing by your side. A part of me is forever with you, too. Ciao, sweet, sweet Mario xoxo

Mario was a much loved classmate at Cornell Graduate School of Management. We commuted together and never stopped laughing on the long drives between Ithaca and Boston. On a summer trip to Europe, it was amazing to see Capri through his eyes; he was totally in his element. Over the years, he has been a treasured friend as well as an inspiration in the courageous way he battled his illness. He touched many people and will be sorely missed.

My sympathies to the Alfano family. Mario gave me a chance when nobody else was willing to at the beginning of my career. I owe him so much. Thank you for being a friend, thank you for being a mentor and thank you for being you. You will be missed but never forgotten. RIP my friend.

I met Mario through one of his friends and colleagues. Though he only knew me through a friend, Mario was extremely helpful to me with job leads and advice when I returned to the US after working overseas. I will always remember his gentle spirit and his contagious laughter. May his soul rest in peace. He will be missed.

Mario, I will never forget you. We had some very silly times back at Colgate and yes like the other entry in the guest book, you always said "remember I will always be your boss." You are an inspiration to us all.

My earliest memories of Mario are from of him pinching my cheeks when I was a young kid. Every time he visited my parents (Ken and Beth) I knew my poor cheeks were going to get a pinch (or three!). A few years ago when I was a senior at GWU and nervous about the "real world," I met up with Mario in DC for some career advice. I remember distinctly the stylish coffee shop he chose on a small side street in Georgetown, the espresso and treats we shared, and the good advice Mario gave. I have to say I was scared he would pinch my cheeks! (but he did not). I am grateful for the time he took to spend with me and for the friendship he gave to our family. I am glad he is at peace after a long and inspiring battle. Mario will be sincerely missed.

I first met Mario at the Campbell Soup Company in 1984. An extraordinary friend, Mario would "drop in" when we lived in London, and we visited him when he lived in Paris. Mario once spent a long weekend on our coffee table trying to recover from putting his back out and watched an "Absolutely Fabulous" marathon with me. We both ended up "back home in Boston" after all the globetrotting- Mario more than me- sharing lunches, laughs and lemoncello in the North End. Ken went with Mario to the crazy Russian steam baths, and Mario's perseverance, treatment creativity and success with his cancer was inspirational to Ken as he dealt with melanoma treatments. Mario was one of a kind, and we loved him for it!

Mario was the cousin of my cousin, and we were reaquinted as adults at a family gathering in the mid-90's. During the time that Mario was in California, we kept in touch, exchanging numerous emails..usually which consisted of great advice from Mario. On a visit to San Francisco, Mario and I spent a great weekend during which he introduced me to restaurants in my own city - something I think only Mario with his creative resourcefulness could pull off. At that time, I remember him telling me about some of his 'new S. California' personal trainer lifestyle and how excited he was that he'd taken a business trip to Utah and skiied....and enjoyed it! While we've lost touch in the last two years, I have many fond memories of how personable, funny, creative and interesting Mario was. Our conversations, whether via email or live, always brought me inspiration. My deeply felt condolences to my cousin Sarah, my Aunt and Uncle and to his immediate family and freinds.

Mario was a fine gentleman whom i had the pleasure of conversing with several times at The Dante Aligieri Society and The Pirandello Lyceum Awards dinner. He had a special friendship with my recently deceased mother Lorraine who also suffered with illness in recent years. They mutually admired each other for their courage in fighting their physical illnesses. Rest in peace Mario. my sympathy to your family.

Mario was my JHU-SAIS Bologna classmate, and deep inside he is a joyfully real "italiano nel cuore". He loved and appreciated my country unreservedly. Also for Mario, I believe that "life and death are one, and the entity of our existence is eternal, persisting throughout past, present and future. The setting sun, radiant with joy, gives proof of its undiminished power and at the same time offers a promise of a bright tomorrow". I am certain that Mario like a setting sun, radiant with joy, will shine again to confirm the promise of a bright tomorrow and to continue the eternal path of happiness...I will pray for his passage, the great companionable love of the universe, now, is supporting him. Sincerest condolences to his beloved ones, with my greatest respect, Maurizio A. Mercadante (Catania, Italy) NMHRK.

Mario was my first Boss when I began my career at Polaroid Italy, back in the early 90s. Mario taught me almost everything I know, from a business perspective: what I have begun is a result of his patience and constant coaching. Then, over the years, even though he loved to say "remember that I will always be your boss", Mario became a dear friend and a precious mentor, someone I would always turn to when I needed advice. Thank you Mario for your friendship, for your energy and passion and the love you always showed for Italy and your Italian friends. Your will always be in our hearts.

Mario and I met in Bologna, Italy at SAIS; I have fond (and funny) memories of our trip to Piemonte to give educational talks to our Italian contemporaries -- we were on horseback at one point, for reasons that now escape me. I remember Mario as a kind, gentle, intelligent presence who could always make me laugh. After such a long struggle, may he rest knowing how much he brought to us all along the way. My thoughts are with all who love him. Nancy Kellner (Washington, DC)
