MARION SANDERS Obituary

SANDERS, Marion Marion Sanders, age 90, of Dedham, MA, passed away peacefully on Thursday, April 25, 2024 at NewBridge on the Charles in Dedham, MA. The cherished sister of Judith Sanders Goodie of Wilmette, IL and Richard (Jo) Sanders of Denver, CO, she was also the loving aunt of nieces, nephews, grandnieces, and grandnephews. A graveside service will be held on Wednesday, May 1, 2024 at 1:00 PM at Newton Cemetery, 791 Walnut Street, Newton Center, MA 02459. Dr. Sanders grew up in Detroit, MI, and graduated from the University of Michigan in 1954 with a BA in history. She then attended Columbia University's graduate school in New York City, earning a masters degree in special education. She settled in the Boston area after Columbia, and worked as a special education teacher at Weeks Junior High School in Newton, MA. She later earned a doctorate in education from Harvard University, and then began her life's work as a clinical psychologist, educator, author, consultant and mentor. Dr. Sanders was an expert in learning disabilities, testing children, diagnosing their special needs, and counseling a number of schools in the Boston area on how to apply her individualized teaching methods to children in their care. In addition, she was a mentor to graduate students in psychology through the Judge Baker Guidance Center in Boston, many of whom became lifelong friends as well as colleagues. Dr. Sanders also taught graduate students at the Hebrew University in Jerusalem, Israel during the 1970s, and counseled Holocaust survivors living in kibbutzim. She also authored two books about learning disabilities. When a dear friend died leaving three young children, Marion helped raise them and shared their joy when they became parents as well. She was an accomplished pianist and served on the board of the Rockport Music Festival in Rockport, MA. Her artistic talents also included the design and creation of needle works -- knitting, crocheting, and needlepoint -- which she generously shared with her friends. Marion was loved and respected for her kindness, generosity of spirit, wisdom and cheerfulness. She touched the lives of many and helped to make the world a better place. In lieu of flowers, donations in Marion's memory may be sent to: Oasis of Peace, a community of Palestinian-Israeli and Jewish-Israeli families who have chosen to live together peacefully in Israel, which Marion supported for decades, https://www.oasisofpeace.org/the-village or the Alzheimer's Association, https://www.alz.org/ Stanetsky Memorial Chapels 617-232-9300 www.stanetskybrookline.com
