MARK CARNEY Obituary

CARNEY, Mark Owen Longtime Dedham teacher and administrator, Mark Owen Carney, of Wareham, died, April 7, at the age of 55. The beloved son of Barbara and Wiliam Carney, Mark grew up in Dedham and attended Dedham High School. He graduated from Temple University in 1994 with a degree in physical education. Mark joined the staff of Dedham High School in 1994, as an athletic trainer. Over a long career in Dedham, he worked as a trainer, a health and physical education teacher and as Director of Health, Wellness and Physical Education for the Dedham school system. A dedicated educator, Mark loved being in the classroom and working with young people. He was especially committed to ensuring that students with different needs were thoughtfully and meaningfully included in physical education classes. His influence on the students of Dedham extended beyond the classroom. He was a founding chapter advisor of a leadership mentoring program for ninth graders and a strong advocate for CPR training for the senior class. A passionate supporter of Dedham High School activities, he sponsored the E.T. Peterson Scholar Athlete Award, given out to a graduating senior. In addition to his parents, who live in Dedham, Mark is survived by his sister, Catherine Carney, of Roslindale; his sister, Beth Carney and brother-in-law, Joseph Struzziery, of Dedham; and his brother and sister-in-law, Brian and Erin Carney of Dedham. Visiting Hours will be held at the George F. Doherty & Sons Wilson-Cannon Funeral Home, 456 High St., DEDHAM, on Sunday, April 13, from 3-7pm. His Funeral will be held from the funeral home on Monday, April 14, at 9am, followed by a Funeral Mass in St. Mary's Church, Dedham, at 10am. Relatives and friends kindly invited. Peabody Hall-Temple University '91....I woke up last night, on the eve of this Memorial Day Weekend May, 2025, and found myself reminiscing about college dorm days, and happed on my fellow gentle giant Mark. Everything I've read is exactly how I saw him: kind, good natured, even-tempered, and always smiling with his depped up, spiked blond hair. The Boston (Dedham) in him was so infectious and such a novelty on that Philly dorm, i remember once falling into the accent myself, 'what's going on here, i'm talking like you, Mark.' He had a quality that people always wanted to be around him, and it never went to his head. To a good heart and soul, I toast to you Mark Carney a 40 of red bull, like the old days....... Dan
